The key code comes up whenever I launch the game. I'm then asked to hit the Shift and Tab keys and then click on the link above the screen to continue. No problems from there on. Product Keys were quite common when this game was first released.

everyone gets the CD key automatically. Unfortunately the dev has never made it clear.
To get the cdkey, simply go to the steam library, click on the game, look for the symbol on the right side of the screen that looks like a cog. That will be the manage button. Click on the manage button. Next a list will show up. Click on cdkey. there you go. Enjoy!
