I would actually say that Katalina already had some decent tools that people didn't realize until right before patch 1.5.0. While the patch elevated her corner carry into insane levels, she could very well go corner to corner, just not able to force a wallbounce combo like now. She also had probably one of the best far lights in the game, making her stagger pressure, especially from a 66L, some of the most oppressive in the game. She def wasn't top tier, but by the time 1.5 came around, alot of top players actually thought she was better than to be believed.
I would say once stagger pressure become more normalized in the meta, she started to see more pro play. But no deny that the 1.5 buffs made her a monster by giving her insane corner carry, meaning any poke would lead into her bumping into the corner. I think buffs were needed, but maaaaybe they gave her too much corner carry. (coming from a Katalina S++ main myself lol).
