However, if you only plan on playing offline, I will warn that the story mode is not the way it was in the original. They removed most of the rpg mode elements in order to streamline to story. No more weapon rolls, no more equipment sets. You still have the same combat and skills and bosses and all that, but the actual rpg elements are mostly gone.
Arcade mode is fun, but just like any arcade mode, it's rather limited in how much fun you can draw out of it. Fighting computer opponents repeatedly gets boring eventually. There's not too much else to say about the singleplayer, since RPG mode was what made the original's singleplayer content worth looking into.
On the bright side, if you want to try the game out and mess with some of the new mechanics, there is a free version that gives you access to most of the game's features (including almost all online features) and works on a character rotation system. Gives you Gran and then 3 other characters that swap weekly.
Thanks for telling me about the free version. Maybe I will check it out the next time I think about buying the game.
・4 new characters, each with unique intro and outro with all other characters in the game
・A new partner system where you can pick ANY of the playable character as commentary and they'll encourage/trash talk you. (btw, that is A LOT of new voice recording to be done, and the Japanese VAs for this game are all extremely expensive)
・New mechanism with Raging Strike + Raging Chain, and the Brave Point system means the overall pacing and game plan would be drastically different. With new mechanism comes with new things to watch out for, new ways you can extend combo, and new mind games to bait opponent into wasting BP, etc.
・Most characters (with a couple of exceptions) get 4 brand new ultimate version of their specials, which can be comboed into or out of, drastically changing up combo route options. Plus all characters get 3 new dash attacks as an universal mechanism, and all characters can do the new auto combo finisher (the high/low mix 3rd hit)
・Brand new lobby featuring new party game mode akin to Mario Party/Fall Guys
・A brand new act for the story mode (voice acted, and even featured a new original character)
・A new photo mode where you can pose characters with various prop and effect placement
・Of course, the much requested rollback netcode as well as crossplay
It's up to you to decide if the new additions are worth the cost, but they definitely did a lot more than just minor tweaks.
I will say, imo, the offline offering was more substantial in the first game, but the online play in Rising is magnitudes better overall.
Yeah, but you asked if it was good and why people like it, friend. Its smooth, low skill ceiling/high skill-floor gameplay with a wealth of modes and content in a franchise people enjoy but don't often get a lot of in english-speaking countries. In your case? only playing offline? You can try the free version when characters you wanna try are in rotation and see for yourself. The Story mode is stripped down mechanically, but thats a subjective change rather than objective.
I think we have wildly different takes on what reasonable pricing is, and that's fine.
For offline play? No.
With RPG Mode turned into Story mode I'd say it's actually the inferior product of the two in this regard, not that I hold the original in particularly high regard in the single player department either. (Albeit better than most fighters...)
Unless you're desperate to see the rest of the story (so far), then I wouldn't bother.
