How do you learn a new Character?
Sounds stupid maybe?

I wanted to play Vira a bit. Wasnt possible.

Every single guy I encountered went full ham and was just rushing down over and over and over and over and over again as if their life was depending on it.

When I play my main and I encounter someone who tries to get a grip on this game I usally go easy on him. But maybe thats just me.

Feels easier in Street Fighter.

Are you just going straight into matches without going into practice to get a grip on the character's moves?

watch combo video from youtube, lab few bnb's, go ham in ranked = gg?

get a combo or two down and learn the characters moves and buttons, and then I just play a lot of casual matches or I guess lobby matches too till I get a gameplan going and get a better feel for the characters buttons and stop dropping the combos I learn, and then head into ranked, also an optional thing I do is watch top players (in ranked or otherwise) matches and see what they do with the character steal some of their sauce and practice it in the lab, it helps a good amount also

Dont worry about losing at all and makes goals for yourself as you play. Once you feel comfortable with one goal, move to the next. For me it's usually:

1. Go into training mode and see what all the buttons / skills do.
2. Play online just pressing buttons until I get fully comfortable with the buttons and can reliably press the right button for the attack I want without "thinking" about it.
3. Back to training to learn the BnB combos.
4. Back online until I can comfortably land the BnB's without "thinking" about it.
etc...

It's important to note that BnB combos are not at all helpful until you are comfortable with the character. Just hopping into training and learning a few basic confirms will do nothing for you if you can never reliably land the starter to begin with. It's ok to learn them in advance, but just don't expect knowing them alone to improve your play.

Take some time to learn the buttons and what they're all good at, same with your specials. Learn what moves are safe on block and which are not. Figure out what a very basic gameplan would look like. Figure out what your best pokes are and learn what specials can confirm off of them. After all that, take the character out for a spin. Casual, Ranked, whatever you prefer. Expect to lose while you're figuring things out, but know that you'll stop losing after a little while.

Once you've got that groundwork ready to go, combos become a much more relevant part of the process. Build upon what you've already figured out and work your gameplan around those combos. Don't just blindly rely on other people's BnBs without understanding why they do them. Sometimes it's better to sacrifice damage for a better mix-up, or maybe you shave a hit or two in order to not waste a cooldown. Everything you learn will build you a bigger picture of how to play the character, that way you can figure it out yourself instead of just following behind a guide. Guides are meant to kickstart you, not to give you everything in one go.

Regardless, all of this is just my take on the matter. Many people have many different opinions, and everyone learns things a little bit differently. No matter what your takeaway from reading this is, I wish you luck out there!

Going easy on people only feeds their narcissism. Honesty while blunt is what allows people to see where they stand.

As for learning a character, my own procedure is often going in training mode to get a feel for the character and learn the combos. Then I go into arcade and clear it on nightmare for 10-20 times and then I start looking into taking the character into matches. After matches, I look at what bothers me and then head back into training mode to see if I can come up with answers and then I go back into matches again. After this stage I only fall back to arcade mode if I have noone to play against.

Thanks for the tips. The tip with nightmare is something i'm going to test.

Also thx to Tofu. Your right. BNB doenst makes things easier when u dont have a feel for the character.

I usually just goto the training mode and ingrain the basic combos they provide into my muscle memory. So far I have practiced 5 characters and have reached S ranks on all 5. It's a simple strategy but, getting higher than S rank will require you to get your basic fundamentals down to an advanced level (grabs, blocking, spot dodge, roll forward, safe jumps, neutral zone gameplay).

When I'm trying a new character, I usually start with an arcade run, just to get a basic look at their neutral.
I really wouldn't start out worrying about your neutral.

Learn some bnbs for the most common situations and jump into rank mode. You have literally nothing to lose until S rank. And once you make it to S, you will make it back anytime. Don't worry too much about winning. Generic skill is also way more important than character specific knowledge. There is not much to learn with a new character unless you play Narmaya.

What I typically do is I'd go into training mode, look through the character intro and moves to at least get a fundamental understanding of what this character can do.

I'll go through some of the combo practice to get a feel of how to deal damage. Then I run through arcade once before taking it to ranked.

I personally find ranked mode to be a better practice spot than casual due to the much wider range of players you may run into in casual.
