My stick worked out of the box, and so did my PS4 pad.
You have two options:
1. Simply enable Steam Input
This will send your inputs from your controller (or fightstick/hitbox) to the Steam client, to your game. Steam basically emulates an Xbox controller. This will fix your problem and give you the correct icons in game as well. (normally you're stuck with keyboard and mouse icons due to the auto icon bug)
Downside: It adds 1 sometimes 2 frames of input lag, it's barely noticeable, but it's there. (for any of you super sweaty FGC people)
2. Do what I did and just turn on Steam Input, start up the game, map the controls to whatever you want in controller settings (normally you're stuck on default controls due to the bug)
Then set the Icons setting from " Auto " to " Controller " then close the game, turn off Steam Input, launch the game again, then when you get to the title screen, press A on your controller (NOT YOUR KEYBOARD or the game with make that player one) and you should have be able to move on the main menu with your controller and the correct controls while still maintaining X-input so no input lag. Problem solved.
I tried to be as descriptive as I can and there's like two more nuances to this bug(s) but yeah, cheers. lol
It's funny how vanilla GBVS says " partial support for controllers " while GBVSR says " no support for controllers " so take that message with a grain of salt, it's just an oversight.
Steam: Controller detected, you can now use it!
Never had any issue, check your Settings.
Like there are more than 2 controllers on the market, I built my controller and I have to scour the internet for a fix, while some nerd is like "Mine worked must be you being dumb". Like that solves any problems. Please keep these threads with actual useful info so people can actually get this fixed, because it is extremely annoying to spend hours on this, and still have it not work.
