The English dub's quality is really poor
Localization aside there's just such a VAST difference in quality
It's actually kinda painful to listen too XD

I'm hoping they figure out whatever the issue is and fix it for Relink

I genuinely dont see what the issue is aside from some inconsistent volume levels; some characters/lines feel too quiet.

Mind saying which character do you think sounds bad?

Some of them are pretty good, others are terrible.
Anila for example - her ssba where she goes "HIYAAA" is so cringe...

After you have heard Megan Fox voice Nitara in MK1 every english VA is decent.

Yeah, ENG dub is pretty garbage, voices don't suit characters for most of the cast either for being too generic, just outright not fitting the character, or just being so ass they're painful to listen to. Zeta's VA is trying way too hard, Anila's feels like they got some random off the street, Vira sounds like she's in her mid-forties, Cagliostro's ENG VA clearly cannot do a natural cutesy voice and it sounds awful as a consequence (angry/fierce voice is fine tho), Yuel's southern accent is painfully fake and incredibly inconsistent in being maintained, Percival's is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful and sounds like he's just reading off his lines for a paycheck outside of his ultimate skills, Charlotta's VA feels super generic (like you could slap her work on any female member of the Lumiel Knights) and the VA can't stay in character either (especially in her partner char lines), Narmaya's is too deep and sounds like the VA is trying to put on an air of mystery and failing badly for some reason, Ladiva's is just... Blegh... JP VA fits her outgoing and caring nature much more, Belial's VA feels like he was only hired for the Abel part of things and doesn't really sound like a seducer/deceiver typically would (though I see what they were going for with the deeper voice, it just falls flat due to bad direction), most of the others are just generic or sound like they belong in some indie game rather than a AAA project.
Only really good ones I'd say are Beelz (though the JP VA far outshines his performance), Lowain Bros for the surfer dude vibes being a unique take on gyaro, Soriz for nailing the characterization, Grimnir for being the perfect ENG parallel for a wannabe chuuni in the form of a theater/drama kid, Eustace for beong perfectly monotone when needed yet still knowing how to act as one who is hiding their emotions, and Nier for also nailing the characterization as someone unhinged. Though I haven't heard ENG Lunalu, wonder if they got her right.

The strange thing is that a ton of these VAs have done well in past performances. I wonder how much of it is due to bad voice direction on the ENG side of things rather than lack of talent on the VA's part. Wouldn't be the first time I've seen such a thing ruin an ENG dub.

I think I hate dubs because it can sound pretty lame and cringe in English, but everything sounds cool in Japanese

There's no way to dub anime in English without it sounding at least a little stilted. Contrary to popular belief, dubbing isn't as simple as, "Just translating the words."

I don't like how dubs sound either, so I simply choose not to consume them. I think more people should try that.

Because movies and games sound better in their native language. If I play a game by Russians in Russia, it makes sense to play it in Russian as the tone and delivery is different in nature than English (or any other language). Dubs are almost always inferior, other than the very rare exceptions like Final Fantasy XII and XVI since they had legit professional actors and it matched the setting and characters (European actors for European characters). Most dub VAs sound like randos reading a script off the street.

Truth. However, without using mods, you're going to be subjected to other players using the dub so there's still an argument to be had here.

It's like an Asian cosplayer and a western cosplayer wearing the same costume. The westerner would be the only one who looks cringy.

It's just unavoidable. All English dubbed anime will always sound weird, even with good voice actors doing great jobs.
Honestly listening to it more I don't actually think the voice cast is actually the issue
Direction and Localization seem to be the biggest issues
Listening to Vira's Crazed noises in JP vs EN as an example

The Japanese Vira sounds absolutely unhinged (in the best way)
While the English Vira sounds like she's trying not to be too loud by reigning her noises in
This makes the her sound overall unimpressive and somewhat muted

This is not good as the characters are made to be larger than life with strong personalities
That needs to be reflected in their voice work as well

it's an issue that's pretty consistent throughout the entire dub

You all say that English dub always sounds bad or cringe but that's simply not true

We live in a post Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood world
English dub can sound good if given the proper care and attention

This. This so much. The dub in this game is also not even that bad. There are some definite outliers that stand out as horrible (Zeta's voice direction is a complete mess, for example), but most of the cast actually sounds quite good.

Most of the time people are just so used to hearing the characters in one language that the sudden shift is jarring and unnatural sounding. Especially when a lot of anime dubs are actually bad, it makes the ones that sound alright get dragged down with them.

The problems with this game's are definitely not the casting, but the direction. You can tell because most of the voices themselves are actually quite similar to their japanese counterparts, but the way they speak sometimes is flat or just outright bizarre. A great example of this is Yuel, since her voice actually sounds quite similar in both languages, but for some reason is doing a southern accent in english.. and one that sounds a bit fake at that. However, choices like that are not in the actor's hands most of the time. That's a direction problem all the way.

Anime dubs have come a long way and most of them with half a budget actually sound pretty good. There are a lot of talented voice actors out there doing good work. There's just a stigma around them and a handful of poorly directed characters in this game.

Who's playing japanese games with english dubs anyway?

Too me its the opposite . Most jp anime is cringe with how it sounds.
I literally wait for English unless it takes forever to catch up.
