Or the golem could break the link, yes. Because his test was to fight Kax-Teh, and he did - kinda.
It shouldn't be a flashback since Fathermother had lost his clothes and had the lost eye from the first game. And mainly since Ghat visits Deadra and Henae at the coast.
I suppose the south golem could have broken the link, but there wasn't really any reason for him to do so, not to mention that he did some flashy hand waving the other time we saw him break the link. Even if he considered Ghat to have passed the test, he seemed more concerned with his own life than breaking the link.
1) Ghat makes Xotl-Teh break the link and when he is defeated he never re-links Golem to Ghat in the end. It is not his immediate concern to link Ghat at the end since Kax-Teh has caught him in this deadly situation.
2) Xotl-Teh could have broken the link in the end if he wanted. He is obviously a bit of a sadist, but this doesn't necessarily mean he is a killer. It's very unlikely - given his personality - that he would be concerned about killing Ghat with Kax-Teh in this life threatening moment.
The scene of Father-Mother isn't a flashback. Both Ghat and Rimat are returning from High City right after this battle.
Kax-Teh has no reason to keep Ghat linked to him, since he wants the outside world to bring new golems.
Btw: I never did the link both golems to me thing, I was always linked to Kax-Teh.
I didn't, actually. I just linked Xotl-Teh with the minions and damaged him that way. That he would break the link if you linked him with Kax-Teh didn't really occur to me, but it makes sense.
Morthy, I don't think Kax-Teh can break the link since he didn't do it during the fight. It seemed like Xotl-Teh's command overrode his. In the fight against Kax-Teh, he was surprised that the link was down but didn't reestablish it.
Stormking, you don't have to break the link during the fight. I managed to finish it without doing it.
What'd you use to damage him before minions spawn? Just bombs/specials/guns?
I managed to hurt him through some combinations of normal attacks, strong attacks and special attacks. Maybe I just punched him so hard I broke the game's coding.
My first instinct when reaching the final boss wasn't "How will I damage him?" but "If I link him to Kaxteh, he can't hurt me without hurting himself" and then was pleasantly surprised to find Xotl-teh didn't want any part of that. :P
