Ranged hunter build?

I'm totally new to the game, and it's surprisingly difficult to find a proper guide online. I intend to play the trilogy on the standard difficulty, and I'm just looking for some pointers on the basics, mostly how to assign my stat points upon leveling and which skills to choose so as not to screw my character later.

Did you check the guides in the Workshop here? Such as this one:

I don't like using guides, but after I played for a while I did check out some of them on the "guides" tab, and changed a few things. The nice thing about this game is that you can undo and reassign your skill points as often as you like
