And, after Settlers - New Allies was on offer here (20,09€) I bought it to form my own judgement. In my opinion, it's not so bad as many critics on the WWW. I think it's better than PoP - but PoP is also early access
The issues of "Settlers - New Allies" was generally spoken simple design flaws in production chains (forestry, soil, no usage of water), a military system that works, but isn't outstanding in any kind and a AI (PvE) which seems simply scripted. Additionally a high price and ingame shop, plus, last but not least: server issues
For some reason they are still updating the game and have even updated forestry, so, yes, for 20 €, why not?
By the way, if someone says that PoP is boring, this personal opinion is of course valid. This kind of game lives from optimizitation, efficient building and some micromanagement! It´s not a RTS game to build up an army and destroy another factions buildings. (of course a "Settlers - New Allies" game looks way more interesting, when you burn down a complete village and have your archers shooting arrows
Then I remembered that it was released 13 ½ years ago.
Then i felt old.
This is my contribution regarding Settlers 7 and History Collections.
from what ive seem the latest settlers game is way superior to this in its current form. id only pick this one up on a sale.
I still remember how happy I was when I played Settlers 3. It's so memorable, that I wished there's an improved version of it. Unfortunately, the editions after that were no longer attractive or captivating at all.
Then when New Allies came, I immediately thought that it is the 3D version of Settlers 3 with improved mechanics and visuals. Sadly, it's not available in Steam. So I'll keep on searching and hoping that someday someone made a "replacement" for that in Steam.
I was hoping PoP is the one. But got disappointed when other people say it's still below New Allies. So I guess I'll have to wait another 1-2 years, before actually buying it.
I remember playing the demo version of Settlers 1 with my friend, before the full version came out. You could do everything, but the playtime was limited to 1 hour. We started over and over and over again, just to see what was possible within the one hour limit, trying to squeeze it just a little bit more. Those were the days...
And regarding "Settlers - New Allies" it's also completely different.
- City Building with focus on RTS, commanding troops directly
- City Building with some "indirect" troops commanding but still strategic thinking (don't feed the werewolf and have rangers against thieves)
It's like sports car and offroad vehicle. Some people would now say:
We need a S(ports) U(tility) V(ehicle)! Perfect for everybody!
