price of modern indie games
i dont entirely get it, clearly the world is gone to ♥♥♥♥, people have less money, inflation is rampant, a lot of indie games and studios died this year, so people paying half of a triple A game for a indie game might be somewhat a lot, but you have a huuuuuuuuge volume of gamers. so why not buy thousands of a game for 5-10 bucks (and have more reviews on top) instead of a few hundred for 25? :/

i'd argue many big successes like terraria and vampire survivors were because good games were also sold incredibly cheap.

Terraria is old, VERY OLD.

Vampire Surviviors is the ugliest "bullet hell" game out there, and didnt take long to develop, its a basic at they come.

This is a fully fledged 3D game with alot of mechanics, handmade AND randomized maps, and just overall a much higher quality than your 2 examples.

I assume you are young, and dont have a steady income, otherwise this post wouldnt excist.

funny, cause i am old and have a steady income but the cost of living rises way more than my income. volume of sales still is a factor no indie company seems to use.

If you want games to be supported beyond release, and high quality, you need to be willing to pay a reasonable amount for the game. You also need to keep in mind that developers only get about 50% of the price you pay after steam takes their cut, refunds, taxes etc. Not to mention the expectation gamers have that the game will go on heavy sale at some point (this is factored into game prices).

I'm okay with reasonable prices as long as they don't have microtransactions and try and gouge you multiple ways (like all the AAA are doing these days).

(Also regarding volume of sales, you aren't correct, it simply doesn't work that way, higher prices also mean a higher perceived value and selling less copies at a higher price can be less risk).

but 50% of 100 copies for 25 is still the same as 50% of 250 copies for 10.

The audience size for a game is not infinite.

based on your profile, no you are not old.

Prices go up everywhere, adapt or scale down, easy as that.

this game will not use all the possible audience ever, not with a price of 25 or 5€

They sold over 2k copies in under 30 minutes. Price seems fair.
CosmoConnor Dec 13, 2023 @ 3:17am
Who guarantees you more sales just because the price is cheaper? No one! This is just a theory of yours.

The discussion is always the same, everyone wants to be paid fairly for their work, but when it comes to paying others for their work then people don't want to hear anything about it. By the way, you can get the game, completely legally, for around 22€. I don't understand why it's too expensive!

Production value.

Creating 3d games takes far, far, far more man hours.

you realize that the number is arbitrary? its a number someone made up and the users deemed ok, games could be 5000$ if people paid it, because 3d takes far far more man hours.
