For Mac it is the effort versus gains as you said it. A native Mac version is a lot of work in itself and Metal works completely different than DirectX12 once you start using advanced features.
To be fair such answers are not for the eternity, but as far we can currently see in the future. Depending on the success of Pioneers of Pagonia and the demand of a Mac version we may revisit our options next year. But for now, we do not work on it.
Now that Apple released the game porting toolkit in macOS Sonoma and it should do the heavy lifting from DirectX 12 to Metal, any chance you'd reconsider? 😅
In meantime i habe my focus on mac native games…so no „pioneers“ for me.
