Why a remake? :(
Why a remake? This should have been an entirely new game, with a fresh story and gameplay. Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a "no-no" when it comes to remakes because, to me, they seem like a lazy and greedy way to make money. Many companies resort to this as they can rake in cash with minimal effort - instead of making a new game, they just "redesign" an existing one.

agree with "why not a new game". but lazy and greedy is not right

Alright, I could agree with you if, let's say, a given "remake" game is priced appropriately as just that - a remake. Let's say, make it about half the cost.

However, experience shows that in most cases, remake/remastered games come with the same price tags, and in some scandalous instances, even higher ones.

We love the game, it's one of our first big successes as a publisher, so it holds a special place in our hearts. It's also a remarkable game that has had a lasting impact on those who played it. I don't think a sequel would have been appropriate. Two new brothers? Sisters? It would likely be a heavy-handed attempt to capture lightning in a bottle twice.

Given that it's on its ten year anniversary, it felt appropriate to update the game to modern day specs so a new generation can experience the story.

Some people will never like the idea of a Remake, and that's fine. Others will see it as an opportunity to play a game that they likely would not have played otherwise.

I don't understand.
The original game is perfectly playable. Looks and plays very well. Is remake adding anything? From a trailer , it looks exactly the same..
To me it looks like trying to sell the same game for a second time, so yeah, like the OP said, smells like greed.
I suppose the idea is to sell this on new consoles. for PC there is little reason to re-release it.

You know, I don't completely dismiss the idea of remaking a game. I might even replay it just to enjoy a better visual experience. Of course, as long as we're paying only for that - "for the improved visuals," and not for an entirely new game, because it's not.

And the argument that there's hardly any way to come up with a sequel story is a bit silly. Anything can have a sequel as long as there's the will. Haven't we all seen Marvel movies? :D

Will owners of the original game get it for free? Since it´s just a graphics update, that would be appropriate. The (great) developer Tikipod did that for Aqua Kitty Milk Mine Defender and I think it´s best practice.

There aren't a lot of people that will play a game from 2013, the PS3 era, no matter how good the game is. By updating the character models, improving the lighting, textures, graphics, music and controls, it opens it up to people who would probably never give it a shot.

Sounds like a remaster. Not a remake. You aren't adding anything new.
No new story, no new characters, no new gameplay mechanics, no new features like online coop, no ultrawide support etc. To be fair, it seems like you will be adding steam cloud saving.

You're trying to appeal to a type of audience that wouldn't play an amazing game just because it's 10 years old. You should try to appeal to a different audience.

But then again,if you have a certain expectation of how much profit you'd be making by not risking as much time to redevelop the whole game, and just simply giving it a new look, it makes sense.
Hopefully you risk more next time and develop something amazing again.

Devs can do whatever they want. They are not forcing anything upon us. If they project more profit from new players on a remake than from their "acquired" player base on a new title, I have no data to argue.

My way of detailing the question would be: Any reason for old owners to play the new version ? I'm not a collector; I don't find the art outdated... Any incentive I could be missing ?

Sure, I would understand if the remake looked better, but honestly I have no idea of what's the purpose of making a remake that looks hilariously so much worse than the original. Do you think the potential buyers of the game are the kind that would prefer poorer visuals with more polygons?

I love the original, finished it again last weekend. It still holds up is an understatement - it has not aged at all, it looks so beautiful. I've bought it 3 times already + 1 time as a gift for my favourite gaming youtuber (Mapocolops), so he can play it and upload the walkthrough.
I'll never forget this game, it's a masterpiece. Thank you developers!
I will gladly buy the updated version as well.
P.s. While writing this comment I just bought it the 4th time for my PC :D .

I hope that the author of this discussion is not generalizing the concept of game remakes. If he also doesn’t see the point in remakes of old games from the late 90s - early 2000s, then I have BIG questions for the author of this discussion.
smashthestate Feb 18, 2024 @ 2:21pm
From what I can tell it does look worse than the original

If you threw away the old code and textures and models.. and start from scratch writing the new game, it is, as a matter of fact, a remake.

The reason could be that you just want to experience the game again but you enjoy having the thing a bit difference; I find a lot of interest in confrontations and variations, as in music covers.
But that could be my reason and for people like me. I understand if a lot of you don't. And yep.. I will not go for full price or release date. I usually don't, but if I already played the game I certainly don't.

I understand your point but I should say.. I have a lot of doubt about the art style and realization of this new visual.. but the original game had something in his that I disliked so much.. maybe something in the broken bodies.. I really don't remember now but I remember that something clearly appeared to me like it came out wrong in the models.
That gave me a kind of resistence playing this game again; I should play it with my new girlfriend but I really can't because of this.
Maybe this remake will erase that disconfort. I don't know yet.
