Funcom is too incompetent of a company to do anything for a long-term.
They'll inevitably butcher their games or outright abandon them because they wanna make short-term cash sales over a loyal and committed fanbase.
Evidently they butchered their baby The Secret World and alienated a majority of their old fanbase this way by giving them a dumbed-down clone of the SAME GAME with little to no difference in graphics or whatever was promised. This completely crashed and burned and the person behind "Handoiron's" account is literally the only person defending this company on their forums.
They're lucky to have such great IPs under their control, but they're unlucky to have the most stupid people riding the helm, it makes EA look like a Saint. Conan Exiles only did so well because it was set in a brutal universe that was made for an adult demographic, its not for "kids". As soon as they came out with Battle Pass for Exiles, it was game over.
Same people that complain about nudity in their games should go back to Church.
Probably even think Cyberpunk is about sex too cause they lived in such brainwashed upbringings. If anyone here thinks Conan The Barbarian franchise games sold because of nudity, think about how much and how instant you draw your conclusions to it relating to sex. The most cult-like hypocrites obsessed with sex funnily enough.
I don't have much to live for right now, so would I say ^ that to you? I would... because your toxicity is ruining what little Fun I thought I'd have reinstalling the game tonight reading your negative energy comments all because someone actually pointed out a real fact to you and it bruised your ego since you were going on pure opinions.
I workout and im very smart, never lost a fight due to that.
It never happened and as good as it was it's pretty dated now, and they didn't improve it when they updated it.
I'd love to see a new Secret World game with modern graphics and the same kind of storyline about a secret society that travels around the world managing outbreaks set in modern times.
Now it could incorporate AI into the NPCS.
I'd buy that in a second.
None of that matters here ... The Dev's have stated both TSW and SWL are in permanent maintenance mode ... and until the player count is dead/zero ... it will just be 'on life support'.
You could offer them billions of dollars... but the truth of the matter is the soul is gone... the corpse is just pumping blood and breathing air.
they been promising a new engine so long ago (yeah they released a buggy beta engine that had upgraded graphics potential but used the original graphics so it was ugly and too buggy to play)
If they ever return to this IP, they should make a single player RPG. This is a theme which appeals to a smaller and more sophisticated audience than generic fantasy, and MMOs are RPGs for mouth breathers. What Funcom did was like opening a fast food restaurant that specialized in exotic dishes with foreign names, whereas what the primary market for fast food and MMOs wants is burgers and fries that get the salt and sugar delivered to their bloodstreams as quickly as possible, in easily repeated visits where they barely have to pay attention to what they're ordering.
A single player RPG is more like a traditional restaurant, where you can tailor the experience to a smaller clientele who have an appetite for a specific cuisine, and who are willing to pay more for a smaller amount of food on their plate. That's how you stay in business selling a niche product. In a live service business model where you're relying on daily logins, you're not going to keep up with the larger developers making the exact same product but with a lower budget and less mainstream appeal. You instead need to make the game that people play to take a break from their daily login games, understanding that most are going to go back to their daily login game after 80 hours or so. So just give the game a satisfying ending at the 80 hour mark, and they'll be back in a couple years for the next one, spending about the same amount of money that the average person who loitered for a thousand hours on a free-to-play MMO did over that same period of time.
Thinking about starting again, but yeah, probably just gonna make another fixer in Anarchy Online which is a GREAT GAME.
After Conan Exiles, I have learned my lesson with Funcom, which can be summed up to this :
Good concepts but bad designs and development.
That's pretty much it. They will always show cool and interesting stuff but always, always drop the ball. Their games are never made to last. They lucked out with Conan Exiles, Dune might not be it as so far, the feedback has been that it's another buggy Conan Exiles with guns, with crappy melee and gunplay.
When this game dropped the post modern horror effects are what made it. The moment you got buzzed in your apt. It wasn't the graphics which were still good for the time of building and release. It was the fact that it was a world that was modern. In settings of horror and mystery. A cosmic horror game that was verging with 2012's fear monger trend of the sky is falling.
It was tab tagetting mostly back in the day and yeah it was jank as hell then. But the game had charm. Fighting a pack of zomblie walkers in the church grave yard with some rando shot gun guy you just met near the station? Timeless.
But those days are over. It's a elder game and that's fine. I wish they had give us the Dune/Conan style building of a game with TSW Ip but why should we care if they don't.
