Though if the key is unused I don't know if you can still make an account, but it's worth a shot.
Otherwise it would be nice to have a private branch server like you're suggesting :/
I have both the Steam and the Funcom versions on my computer and the Funcom version still has all my characters. I'm giving the Steam version a try because I don't expect the FPuncom version to remain hosted as long as the Steam version and am finding gameplay isn't as bad as it is made out to be, for example, investigation missions don't walk you through them as many have claimed, they are identical, or at least the Solomon Island ones are, could change later on, I haven't finished Solomon Island yet so I can't say. Yeah, some missions gave changed, like returning the RC Plane to Danny starting in a different place and not having webcam pictures of the girl in the Morning Light camp but that was never an investigation mission and the change makes more sense with his stated use of the RC Plane. That said I'm still going to concentrate on the Funcom version, just want to be ready if Funcom releases new content on only the Steam version. Just for clarification Funcom and Steam versions refer to The Secret World and Secret World Legends respectively, both are by Funcom it is just refering to where they are hosted.
There's The Secret World, the original game launched in 2012, and Secret World Legends, which launched this year.
SWL has a "Steam" version (though it's really just the same game, just your account is linked to Steam for log-in and in-game purchase purposes) and the standalone "Funcom" version.
TSW used to be hosted on Steam as well, but it was automatically updated to SWL shortly before the game launched on Steam in July. It is no longer available for download through Steam.
https://register.thesecretworld.com/account - This is the legacy website for TSW. It has been several years, though, and I don't know if it's still around.

Please keep in mind you need to have a valid CD key attached to your account to be able to play TSW Classic. If you have never played TSW Classic and have only played SWL then you must convert your account to Classic in order to play that this is a one time occurrence and cannot be reversed once it is done.
