How do you get Third Age Fragments?

In Argarta you can buy weapons but ask for Third Age Fragments, where do you get those coins?

Third age fragments only come from caches atm – Agarthan Cache & Infernal Cache.

Caches can only be opened with a specific key. You can purchase a key with aurum or get a single key per day by being a patron (subscriber).

In any case, while the gear is of epic quality, it’s not very good other than being used as fodder gear for fusion. You’ll want to stick with at least 3-pip weapons/talismans and hopefully grab 3-pip extraordinary gear while you continue playing. Extraordinary gear has a red background which just means there’s some sort of special effect on the item.

Think of caches like chests. They are dropped from mobs or purchased in Agartha with Marks of Favour.

You have to be level 15 before the Caches start dropping from enemies... And they will drop fairly frequently then.
You need a Cache Key to open them - a key costs 150 gold. You can buy gold through the exchange or with cash. If you're a Patron you can also claim 1 key a day (you have to manually log in to claim it, though).

Again, Caches are an item (loot) drop. When you reach level 15, enemies you kill in the game will start to drop them. They look like big purple canisters (or maybe... big purple soda cans). Like Brown Beard said, you can buy them as well at Agartha from one of the vendors, they cost 50 Marks of Favor each.

The easiest way to buy weapons is through the Auction House directly. Press H to open that. It has many different search options. You can search for weapons in general. You can search for a specific type of weapon (Pistol, Shotgun, Chaos Focus, etc.). You can choose the quality level (green, blue, purple, etc.) to search for. If you know the name of what you want, you can also type that in.
You have to spend Marks of Favor to buy things on the Auction House - you get these from doing Daily Challenges (press Shift + J to see these). If you are not a Patron, once you pay for the item, you must go to the auction house in Agartha to pick the item up.

EDIT: The portal with tentacles is the special event called the Whispering Tide that continues until August 15th. It opens every hour at two minutes past the hour (11:02, 12:02, 13:02, 14:02, etc.) - just run into it when it starts glowing bright and white. Any player can enter as long as they've reached Kingsmouth (the first zone).
