Cannot init d3d or grf file problem SOLUTION :))

Alright so i had this error coming into the game with a geforce gtx 660ti, most people myself included realize that when running the setup for ragnarok their graphic options stay blank and they cant choose a graphic card or resolution. Well this happened to me and after a bit of research and ALOT of wrong answers i finally realized what was wrong. The problem is that in my case after runing the dxdiag exe (which u can run after hitting the start button in widows and typing dxdiag) i saw that d3d acceleration was only enabled partly in 32bit mode and always on in 64bit mode since i run a 64bit windows. Now how do we change d3d accelaration well we cant do it in dxdiag but what we can do is download a file that makes it possible to alter the settings. http://www.3dcenter.org/download/directx-control-panel <--- this is the link to the file
its in german but u need the file that is sitting under the word download link and is called "DirectX Control Panel (Juni 2010)" U unzip the file via 7zip and now run the file dxcpl_x86
once it started u switch to direct draw tab and check the "use hardware acceleration" field there
apply these changes.
Now u can run the ragnarok setup again and your graphic and screen size options shouldnt be blank anymore just select the desired options and happy U it will work now (At least it worked for me^^)

P.S When u run the Setup dont forget after u set ur graphics to go to the option tab and enable effects and auras its disabled by default :))

Can anyone help me solve this and fix my pc so I can play Ragnarok?

Okay i looked at it, well if u run a game and run dxdiag it should show your geforce, since sometimes systems use the onboard card for prozesses that are not to intensive graphic wise, since nowadays they are quite strong and can handle some pressure. otherwise i believe u can select them from your nvidia settings by right-clicking on your desktop :))

so what u need to do now is follow the link i gave above in the opening post and download the file i mentioned there. If u did that follow the steps, to activate your direct draw hardware acceleration and u should be fine :)) if not come back and tell what happened :))

I still having the same problem :/ i have the acceleration hardware activated by default, i cant play full screen mode

Tried driver and DirectX... Nothing helped, renewal run fine, but did not want a classic. Found a simple solution - "Setup_Classic.exe" -> right-click Properties -> Compatibility -> WinXP SP3. There was a menu screen resolution and run in full screen.

So... late to the party pretty massively, forgive the necro post, but can't find much anywhere going into sufficient technical detail. I can launch RO.... in full screen. Only. I enabled both x86 and x64 Direct Draw Hardware Accelleration, Setup can successfully detect the video card and set a resolution... Normally this wouldn't be too bad since I *can* launch the game, but I've got a 4k monitor and can only full screen as high as 2048 x 1536 - any higher causes the infamous d3d/grf error.

Anyone have any ideas? R9 390X, updated drivers, latest directX (dxdiag shows all is well), though I *do* have Windows 10. Currently running anything RO XP SP3 compatibility.

I cannot believe that this actually fixed my problem, but it did. Wiped my PC and reinstalled Win10 from scratch and all the other fixes I googled didn't work. I was wary to download a 3rd party program that was several years old, but surprisingly the links still worked and it fixed my problem. I was able to see my video card and resolution settings after applying the "Use Hardware Acceleration" box on the x86 client successfully.

Thank you for sharing the solution. It worked for me on a clean install of Win10x64 and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX1080.
