And to get access to the newer area you need the booster pack and it provides other bonuses but until you get higher level that part will not matter.
Stuff like cash shop pets and permanent unlocks for sidekicks (they rotate with one free each week, plus you get Astrub Knight from quests) you can buy for in-game currency from other players.
What is going on exactly?
Both games were severely limiting in their Free to Play department years ago. Maybe not as much in Dofus, as I didn't play that for as long, but Wakfu was definitely more of a "trial" than anything else. It's opened up entirely now. Maybe Dofus as well, not sure.
