You have free reign to move around, you can teleport (makes it easy to not get locked), and they focus on AP and initiative manipulation. Plus, their move range is ridiculous when you do it right. I think I remember the farthest they can move in one turn, at level 10 and without any stat boosts, was nine squares if you use the dial and teleport in conjunction. Add to this the fact that teleport damages enemies when you use it and it's pretty much a done deal.
Couple either the AP or initiative spells with the fire spells and you've got yourself a glass cannon which rivals even the Sacriers in firepower, however instead of bringing your enemies to you, you have to avoid your enemies. Another option is to focus only on the AP and initiative spells and completely ignore the fire spells, which makes them the best debuffer in the game when you're playing with others. But you said you weren't looking for that.
If you want to play a Xelor who can tear enemies apart, what you want to go for is the water and fire spells. This will give you enough AP to rain a ridiculous amount of damage onto your enemies around level 30 (this is about the time the class starts getting superpowered, before then it's just manageable). But like I said, you'll have to avoid them. If you practice avoiding enemies and get to know how far they can move, you can avoid pretty much anything long enough to solo most mobs at your level. It can get pretty tactical. It's all about understanding movement squares, and if you master this along with how to combine your spells, it stops being a struggle to stay alive and starts being all like "I AM BECOME TIME, DESTROYER OF WORLDS."
Their summon is piss though, At least, it is if you try to build your character around it from the start. Avoid it until you can respec your attributes and gear to revolve around the control stat and AP manipulation.
