do i really have to open multiple characters to make progress in this game?

I play only 1 character and didn't have any trouble so far (I'm lvl 53).

You can find a guild if you want, but if you want to run dungeons, you WILL need help because they are very hard, and some battles are impossible to complete alone (Missiz Freezz for example).

The bonus Hero booster helps a lot, not only you can play with 3 characters of your choosing, you'll level up faster, gain more tokens and some other bonuses.

If you have an account on Dofus have a lot of money to spend (like myself), you can use the Kamas on Dofus to buy ogrimes and spend it on Wakfu, so you can have it without having to pay.

Depends on what you call Progress. You can make a progress with sidekickers, farming dungeons without the boss room, just redoing the dungeon before the boss battle. That's how you'll level with a decent progress, you can farm mats and sell them in order to buy a better gear. Sidekickers doesn't need gear because they get stat boost (If you wanna gear them the gear need to be the very best)

I think you'll get 2 sidekick for free each week, just press 'K' in game and you can select them, and you'll be able to play with 3 chracters.

You can progress with only one character at a low level, with a minimum of stuff and tactics (yes, you can make some dungeons alone, but its not that easy). However, you cannot play the game in its entirety alone. You must either be accompanied by heroes (other characters or those offered) or friends / guild to progress. The high level and the very high level is clearly impossible alone, especially with the dungeons of high level.
