DO NOT BUY GameMaker: Studio from steam.
if you buy it directly from Yoyo games you:
(fixed)
1) can open more than one instance
(click on new IDE in upper right corner to fix this)

2) yoyo version gets updates sooner than steam version
3) Apparently if you buy from yoyo games you get a free steam key:

4)Can't use Yoyo game's marketplace - credit to DigitalDemigod

thank you for your message. i will not buy it from Steam. also some users reply as this situation for a while. thanks for all about this isssue. ;)
:/ great how the customer loses out, i really hate when companies do this.
I'm guessing this is more to do with all those that bought directly from YoYo as they did not get the Steam Workshop options? so imo this was only because of all the dissatisfied customer complaints that YoYo have now done this.
It is weird though the option you mention to open more instances is only in non steam version, i can see no reason for this to be like that which begs the question why?

You also say buying from YoYo gets 2 copies now (standalone and steam)?
it might be worth noting that on Steam it is reduced in sales, i dont know if they do this on their website too as not seen it happen?
I was also not pleased when released on Steam and i had purchased 2 copies at full price for easier copy and paste between them only to see a month or 2 later they offer everything in a steam sale at a massively reduced price :(
Looks like i could have just bought one from YoYo and saved myself the second purchase and instead got an extra addon and not had to run 2 pc's linked then as the copies i have are on seperate steam accounts.

So if you are buying on Steam be aware that you could buy at half price or less if waiting for next sale, but then dont get the standalone version? what a ridiculous situation!

If features are different both ways though, why not give free key for standalone version if you bought through steam?
Not great customer treatment there !

I haven't been keeping track of all the sales, but I know there has been at least two times where YoYo discounted the price of GameMaker on their site to coincide with Steam sales.
Hmmm ok well thats odd, just noticed they now offer download for MIPS version FREE which includes UNLIMITED resources and a ton of features you wont even get if bought the standard version ! does have a few features it lacks too though.
The main reason i purchased was to get unlimited resources and this was one of their selling points. I only use for fun, not as a business enterprise nor do i wish too, i have however uploaded a free to play game on steam worshop.
If combine standard and Mips its the same as Pro except for x86 & arm andriod support.(and module support)
In my opinion that seems wrong and poor treatment to customers that supported them.

ANYONE WANTING TO USE THIS DO NOT BUY would be my recommendation, just grab the free parts until such time if you ever need to aquire the options not included.

i wont be buying from steam any future versions for sure...updates/add ons take forever to come (more than 10 days from release of the DLC and still dont have it) and also you dont get the stand alone version like you would if buy direct...big mistake

Well... ♥♥♥♥.

I really wish I'd known all this before I bought the program from Steam. Hell, I didn't even know there was a difference between the Steam and standalone versions at the time. Of course, that is my fault for not researching first... must remember to be extra careful from now on.

Ugh, seriously though, why even have a Steam-exclusive version for sale when you can get both versions, simply by buying from their site instead? Am I missing something here?

I mean, if the Steam version gave you acess to the standalone version as well, then yeah, I'd totally understand, but this...
So you can't see you Licence key on steam? (right click the program and "see key")
Cause if you can you should be able to use that to activate the product from the yoyogames website.
I don't seem to have the option to view the key on steam, I bought my copy through YYG and when they released steam keys I transfered it to steam. I honestly prefer just keeping it simple and using it through steam, delayed updates haven't been an issue aside from the recent exporting problems for app store but I don't believe they fixed that yet.

I do have a problem with not being able to have two windows of GMS open at once like I could with 8.1 and previous.

On the top bar there should be a new IDE button.

That's it, thanks now I have nothing to complain about.
Having to wait a week longer for updates is not a big deal to me. I'm happy I bought it from steam.

I don't mind waiting for the update as it's automatic rather than me having to check and see if there's an update then download and install manually instead of working on my game, whereas steam downloads/installs in the background while I'm doing other things.

What is this "instance"? Could somebody explain this to me. I have't noticed any difference between the Steam version and the stand alone version.

oh when I was new it the program I didn't know how to open more than one instance of GM:S. I found out later that you just have to press on new IDE to open another instance of GM:S.

Basically it means having game maker open more than once at the same time so you can, for example, have one game maker studio open to look at the coding in one a tutorial project while working on your own project in another game maker studio.

I have no problems using multiple IDE's in the Steam Version. I just tried it with version 1.3.1344
I have the Master edition, maybe that make a difference. I have been very happy with the Steam Version and have no issues to complain about.
