I just found the tutorial assets about an hour after looking at this topic.
I use windows 7 and I think thats what messing up the file directory.
Heres how you get the assets after you start your tutorial that said that it downloaded the assets.
In the Start search bar type in "%appdata%" (without "").
Press Enter and you should end up in either the Roaming folder or the Appdata folder(you can look in the directory in the top of the window if you're unsure). If you end up in the Roaming folder go back one folder and you are in the Appdata folder.
Here you will see the Local folder, LocalLow and Roaming folder. Go inside the Local folder and scroll down until you see the "gamemaker_studio" folder. In there is the Tutorial folder and inside that you have all the downloaded tutorials so far.
I recommend making a shortcut on the desktop to the gamemaker_studio folder since the gamemaker.exe can't see the Appdata directory(Bla, bla, bla, microsoft hidden program files)
Hope this helps! ;-)
Post a comment if you find any problems
If not for you then for others i guess :P
I had this same problem and you're solution was a great workaround.
Gamemaker really needs to make it easier to access the downloaded assets from inside the software, rather than having to mess with shortcuts just so the program can even see the assets the tutorial downloaded.
Anyway, thanks for posting you're fix it was of great help.
