If you keep experiencing crashes when starting ths game...

This is for you. If reinstalling doesn't help, what you need to do is to go into the game folder located at Drive:\Whereever steam is\SteamApps\common\Half Minute Hero and then deleting the video file in the res folder. The game apparently cannot play the file thus it will crash every time it tries to play the video.

EDIT: For those still having problems after deleting the video from the directory, try setting the launch options to "-windowed". This helpful tip is provided by Daniel.

Second EDIT: If those two are done and yet your game still crashes, try disabling the "enable steam access in-game" option. This helpful tip provided by MeePwn.

Third EDIT: If you still have problems, try forcing the game to run in 640x480 resolution. This tip is provided by Queen's ChunKiu.

Try loading the game directly in Steam after it starts up and see how it goes. As for your missing d3dx9_42.dll, try checking the game files in Steam and see if there's any missing that's not the video.

i tried that stuff, but the game just refuses to launch. in a "here goes nothing" effort, i tried installing the game in my older, crappier computer, and the game works to perfection. this left me confused beyond words. the only explanation i can think of is that maybe the game just doesnt work properly with windows 7. (my old computer in which i am playing has windows XP and i didnt even need to delete the video or anything)

External drive. My internal is a 500GB drive which never has enough space.

Had the same problem. Installed the game into my secondary Steam-Library on my internal drive. now it runs perfect.

But then i changed the graphics to retro and everything worked fine. i quit after the first mission and set the graphics back and now the game runs fine.
no idea what happened but i guess the intro is somewhat bugged.

As it is, Windows 10 does pick flaws with certain games, so that could be the case. If so, try waiting for a new patch for the game.
