Working on Steam Deck
Valve says the game has been tested and does not run on Steam Deck, but my test today, July 10, 2023, shows that the game runs perfectly and without any special settings. I didn't play for very long, however.

Did they ever have the controls display like XBOX icons instead of "button 1" etc.?

Checked for myself, the answer is yes they did, though ingame it doesn't explain how to set it that way, I had to read the patch notes forum post.
