Keep in mind that in many cases, you have a surprisingly long amount of time to complete a link. Also, for some of the combos it can help to push Poncho back towards the corner before getting going, to help with some of the knockback.

This. When you realize this, they actually feel kinda natural.

I agree with the above about having time to complete a link. The combo system actually works well when you realize that compared to some fighting games, you have a lot of time to do some things.

One of the big things for example, is that if you do attack, attack, attack, [something, for example headbutt] -- the final move can cancel the third part of the attack combo if you do it too early. Instead, try waiting for the third attack to start animating, and THEN do the followup move.

ha...who would actually use one of those combos in the main game? they are so complex and the amount of time required to set it up and pull it off. they put them in there for the sole purpose to challenge you in the chicken dojo

I actually liked some of their aspects though, since they were things I had not thought about doing.

For example, move spoilers:
Power dash punch, roll, power uppercut. Or something similar like punch punch punch, roll, uppercut. Rolling to continue a combo was something I suppose I didn't really think about.

I will probably forget them pretty quickly though. It would be nice if later on there is a way to replay the chicken dojo, or have a list of the fancy combos and an opponent to practice them on. I'm guessing there isn't, but I haven't finished the game yet.

I think it's less about the specific combos and more just teaching you the complexities of the combat. You may not remember the exact combo strings but it still should give you a good idea of what links together.

This! I would love a combo practice mode, or a combo key in the HUD as you're playing.

Guacamelee's combo timing is so forgiving, especially compared to fighting games with tight timing like Tekken and MK and SF, which opens up many possibilities and is just PLAIN FUN to toy around with.

I totally agree, I hate that chicken. HATE HIM! Especially since I play with my young son and we both have to do the combos. Usually winds up with me getting the remote 2 times to do the combo because he doesn't want to orb out

mostly when i fight weaker enemies i do punch punch grapple, piledriver

on stronger enemies i do punch punch uppercut air hit air hit grapple piledriver

those are my most used combos.

on things in the air i do uppercut air hit air hit grapple pliledriver

the little plant things in the ground i do slam hit hit grapple piledriver

if I accidentally hit 3 times and knock it away i do a dodge roll toward them then hit them 2 more times or grapple them and do piledriver

sometimes i just do punch punch punch knock it away then dodge roll into it and punch punch punch again until its dead

I don't do anything near close as the complex combos the chicken makes you do and i beat the game just fine that way

i don't think i ever used the up attack or the down attack ever.

there's an achievment to use "all 5 special attacks without touching the ground" and I have no clue how to do that i don't even know what they mean by "all 5" i know there is uppercut, dash, headbutt, and slam but what's the 5th one? goat fly? so how the heck do i pull that off without touching the ground?

The easiest place I've found to do that achievement is the first arena in the 3rd column in the caverns. You're up against one of the giant hammer skeletons and he's got the multiple shields, so very difficult to kill and he has a huge hitbox.

I think I ended up luring him next to the wall, then went goat fly -> dash -> uppercut -> slam -> quickly canceled into headbutt. Worked pretty well.
