Most important factor is engine speed. Also increased by things like: hull bonuses (fast hull series); certain artifacts (nozzlenator and psi-mater accelerator); and the afterburner (shortcut 'f' in space).
Weight (mass*) reduces the ship overall speed. But it's also reduced by the complete engine wearing&tearing; and by heating it with enemy weapons or artifacts like trenton or zing.
So, it's highly recommended to use a lightweight (to reduce weight), cheap (to use afterburner), and fast engine. Mixed with psi-matter accelerator and as much experience points into "technology" as possible.
