NekoNyan in probation
I’m going to write a long post here. You don’t have to be obligated to read it if you don’t want to.

Now, I'm going to attempt to articulate what I'm thinking about this whole situation. I learned what happened with this game back in late April so at the very least I can claim that I got time to think about it.
I’m pretty much anti-censorship, and of course I’m aware of the censorship culture and the corruption culture regarding Japanese works whether it’s an anime, manga, game etc, including localizers in the manga translation industry in the west -and if you don’t believe me feel free to investigate crunchyroll.

So I’m not going to defend NekoNyan for their actions with this game in particular. We need to understand that every single time a censorship case happens, the fault lies on the publishers, the localizers, and corpo busybodies in particular.

But this time around it happened the other way around. The developer wanted to censor this game, and unfortunately NekoNyan went Nuremberg trial “we were following orders” and kept the censorship around, without any decensor patches.

In my honest opinion, while both NekoNyan and Shimenawan are at fault here, the latter is more guilty than NekoNyan. And again, I’m not going to defend NekoNyan for their actions, maybe they had no other choice but the fact of them participating in censorship practices still remains. If I had to guess, Shimenawan saw the potential money that Steam could make if they were to censor themselves. Bait and switch sucks after all. I suppose that we should write the name of Shimenawan and NekoNyan in our boycott lists.

What’s going to happen to NekoNyan in the future? Well, I am not going to claim that I know it all, but after seeing various products falling down after censorship came along (like Hyper Universe) what I can guess is pure speculation because the pattern of censorship is the same way.

NekoNyan just started to play the game of time. The game where it’s a matter of time of how long they can maintain themselves through product by product. NekoNyan, as far as I can see, is experienced in translating visual novels of good quality and adding decensor patches. I think they can redeem themselves that way...

However, how long will it be before regular customers find out about this censorship event and decide to boycott?
How long will it take for the snowball effect to grow to irreparable levels?
And how long will it be before NekoNyan makes a clear statement against censorship in hopes to recover lost customers?

This is why I named this thread “NekoNyan in probation”, because as far as I’m concerned we need to upgrade our microscopes and remain vigilant to not just NekoNyan but others as well. Maybe NekoNyan learned their lesson -too late- and want to focus in future products with this in mind, but I’m not willing to bet my money and my time on it.

Stay vigilant and tell the truth. Take care.

So far I know, NekoNyan is a respectful company, doing their best to bring good products to their customers.

I am happy they decided to bring Lorena to the west. It's a game that, after playing the original version, I wanted to know the story and lore of the game, and NekoNyan is providing that, with a good quality translation.

I feel they got scammed by the developer. Intentions matter, reputation matters, and they wouldn't have censored the game unless the developers have pushing them to do it.

I am not justifying the censorship. It sucks. But I am not going to blame NekoNyan for that.

It was the developer himself who demanded an all ages version only, and of course NekoNyan obliged. Which you seem to know. They cant just go "yeah ♥♥♥♥ this dev, we just release a patch." Should they have in ur opinion just denied the release conpletely instead of giving us a censored version?

Aside from that, NekoNyan has patches for all their adult games, this is only premature censorship to get these games easier on Steam, and also more accessible. Germans like myself are unable to visit adult only store fronts, so this is a way for us to still buy such products.

Yes. What good is a H game without the H?

You're going to blame NekoNyan for listening to a developer on an IP that doesn't belong to them? Not listening (even if they could get away with it legally) would likely end any prospects of NekoNyan getting licences to distribute any other Eroge, as they would be seen as a publisher who does not respect the original IP holder's wishes.

We don't know the contract, blaming a company for a decision they have no control over is absurd.

they could simply deny publishing half product

if some store were selling burgers from other place but without meat its still on them for selling them.
do you really want to play guess game with every release. Look how senran kagura finished

People indeed have the right to refuse and decline potentially damaged products. I mean, you try bringing your possessions to a pawn shop or sell online. If they don't like it then they won't buy it. The publisher here could have told the developer to stop smoking weed or else face years in prison. The developer lost their sanity, even sold their soul to the devil. Shame.

Sadly, will the modders have to pick up the slack?

Personally, I don't blame the publisher. They had no hand in this decision.
If you want to blame anyone, blame the devs whose sudden decision to get clean has started the whole mess.
