What do Minikits actually do?

In LEGO Star Wars they created space ships that you could fly, in LEGO Star Wars 3 they created characters, in LEGO pirates of the carribean they created ships that you could sail and in LEGO batman 2 they created vehicles. I got all the minikits for the Prolouge but it doesn't look like you can do anything with it, what do they do?

In the first Lego Star Wars game they served no real purpose, I assume it's the same case with Lego LotR.
