one player using a controller

I have an xbox wired controller and when I try to play the game, it automatically starts a two player game and controls both people with my controller. I got it to only control one person, but when I try to drop out the other non-xbox controlled person, it won't let me. How do you get only a one player game with the controller and not the keyboard?

I read Tony's fix and I'm have a bunch of USB devices and I rather not mess with those options. I have two xbox controllers plugged in and the game is not registering either one. is there a simple, non-technical way to fix this? batman lego 2 worked great, but this is so messed up.

I got it solved since i was having the exact same problem. Make sure you have the xbox contoller set to player 2 (since I'm assuming if you had it on player 1 at this point you wouldn't be in this thread) via 'change device' in 'control options'. Make sure you accept it (you'll know you did this right if you exit to the menu and when you go back your settings are still there). Now exit Lego LOTR completely, and restart it. Make sure the first buttons you press are on your controller instead of your keyboard/mouse as soon as you click run (or whatever you use to open up the game). Now the controller is set as default for player 1 since it detects what device presses the first button.. I've had no problems with playing with my controller since I figured this out. Now I just need to solve removing that annoying 'press F2 to join player 2' blinking in the top right... :(

I got a odd problem with my wired xbox controller. everything works fine, I can swap caracters in hobbiton and do part of the black riders story. however when it gets to part where you have Gandalf in first person view and there is the blue x above saruman the controller wont respond when I press the X. I can swap back to Frodo or the other hobbits and even swap controller from player 1 to 2 or vice a versa and remap the controls (and also tried just using keyboard) but it just wont let me start the fight scene with saruman. Maybe its something simple but I tried a lot of things and no luck :(....if someone has a save game after that point that might help :)

If I would have known how badly this game was set up I never would have bought it. Configuring the controls is an absolute nightmare and you can't even disable the splitscreen in single player.

Now I know what to never buy on Steam ever again. Lesson learned.

Tony's solution (page 2) worked fine with my problem: lego lotr uses one xbox 360 gamepads as two... and you can't drop him out or something. Worked as well for Lego Batman 2
This is just a search help for whoever has this problem!!

If you want to play just single in lego. Unplug Xbox Controller. Easy.

Not an option. Doing so leaves you with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ keyboard controls which are even worse.

Anyway, I will give it a try myself. I hope this works for me (have the DVD myself). if it does I might grab it for Steam and pass the DVD on to my brother.

ok...I finally figured out what was going on and got it fixed. For those who suggested stuff...thank you. For those who are struggling still with this issue. Maybe this will help.

I found out that when I plugged in my xbox 360 controller (using Windows 7), it installed the controller as two controllers.

So first, you have to open device manager under the control panel.
Second, I found the Human Interface Devices tab and opened it. Here it had two things, and I disabled both of them. One was the USB Input Device. You don't have to uninstall them, just disable them.
Third, you should still have a tab that says, "Microsoft Common Controller For Windows Class" and under that tab have "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows"
If you disable the one, it will take it only as the xbox 360 controller and you should be fine to play it!

Hope that helps those who are still having issues. It is much more enjoyable with only one player being controlled at a time.

funny so old but i have the problem with every lego game i have tonnns of usb ♥♥♥♥♥ so idk wich one i must disable

Okay so I have a problem almost exactly like this guy and I get this thread is almost 3 years old but if anyone is still around or whatever maybe you could help. So the thing is I don't have an xbox 360 controller i'm using a PS4 controller with a program called input mapper that emulates a 360 controller. Now the game starts up fine and I get in fine but just like this guy it makes the other character there. Cept instead of that one using a xbox 360 controller it just gives it a default controller.

Now I went in the device manager and tried disabling a bunch of things but the problem is I can't disable the xbox 360 controller since the emulator requires it to be on and I can't disable certain USB input devices and other things or the controller itself wont work. I get this is a pretty unique problem but I need some help. Thank you.
