does collecting these lego coins do anything?

hey guys,

i have seen a few "lets play's" on youtube, and the guys playing spent a lot of time running around destroying objects to gather lots of coins.

now my question: do i need these coins for anything?

can i buy better items for me heroes with them?
can i unlock things with them?
do i need them to advance?
what else can i do with them?

i am not interested in unlocking achievements or scores or any kind of statistics, but if i can get items/objects INGAME with these coins its a whole different story

i haven't played much of this particular lego game, but, i've played loads of others. In general the lego studs (coins) are used to unlock additional characters to play (in "free play mode"). Different characters have different abilities. An example from Lego Star Wars would be ewoks are small they can fit in small places "normal" sized characters cannot. Or.. say.. Chewbacca is strong. R2D2 can interact with computers in a way non-droid characters cannot. Stuff like that. So... in Lego LOTRs, one would presume you could unlock more hobbits (to fit in small places), maybe elves (that can do magic) or.. whatever..

Some characters are really expensive to unlock (again using lego star wars as an example), it cost like a million lego studs (coins) to unlock yoda's ghost.

In general in lego games you also use the studs (coins) to unlock various sorts of vehicles. Also.. they are used to unlock various power ups (auto regenerate health, invincibility, faster build speed, etc).
