The problem with this is that the game is not based on the books, it's based on the films. The vast majority of the jokes are referring to material from the movies—much of which is not found in the books at all. So reading the books alone will not help you to understand what is being referenced.
Now if we were talking about LoTRO, I'd say read the books first. If we were talking about reading the books before watching the films, I'd be in total agreement that the books come first. But because this game is so immediately based on the films, I'd say that you're going to miss a lot if you read the books only and then attempt to dive right into the game.
Bottom line: If you truly want to understand all of the jokes and references in the game, you'll need to both read the books and watch the films. But you'll get the majority of them simply by watching the films first.
