Which is a bit unfortunate, since one of the things that the movies changed was to remove the after-story where Saruman takes over the Shire, so when the Hobbits finally do return home they have to take care of things first before the happy ending.
Which I always thought was a nice touch, to show how they've all changed and turned into actual "leaders" -- the Hobbits aren't happy with Saruman calling the shots, but they couldn't really do anything until Frodo & friends arrive to organize things. Frodo and Sam being more of the moral support there, while Merry & Pippin are handling the military side of things -- reflecting the roles they had in the main events.
