It doesn't seem to be an issue with the deck or with the proton layers as I've found one other old thread with no responses of someone mentioning it years and years ago.
The deck is easily powerful enough to run this maxed and upscaled at 1920x1200 or 1680x1050, and it'll hold 60 FPS at those settings like Lego City Undercover or the Batman games BUT it has these awful random drops, I've tried everything to fix it and just can't.
basically, just use protonGE
I have this game long before steam deck. Tried to play on it today.
Without configuration, the game starts, but with some issue:
The main menu shows an animation of Isengard factory and the volcano lava asset is broken, showing a rainbow square sprite instead.
Using some proton GE versions suggested in protonDB, I couldn't boot the game at all.
I just tried it again today and it absolutely does work perfectly with the latest version of Proton GE.
I'd try reinstalling and or making sure the you use protonGE for the first launch.
On a very few select games changing the proton version can cause issues with them launching.
As of February 2025 though, the game still works without any graphical artifacts using ProtonGE or the versions listed on Protondb
