Flashing Water Bug in Proton
I'm running the game on Linux through Proton-GE 8.6

So, game runs smoothly without issue, except for the fact that water is flashing bright colors and is visible through walls, making areas with water really unpleasant if not borderline unplayable at some points.

I've tried multiple versions of Proton already (GE Included), it runs smoothly even just on experimental.
Versions lower than 8 seem to crash after the first screen for some reason despite me setting up protontricks.
I've cleared all files to have a fresh install to try on everytime.

I've researched this but there's literally just one instance of this happening to someone, no documentation at all.

Has anybody else encountered this issue? If yes, is there a fix for this?

Oh god they still haven't fixed this after all this time.. on steam deck as well
Proton ge worked
interesting. on Linux PC (Nvidia, xorg) protontricks command only allows game to run (it will immediately crash without it). but it won't fix the water bug.
try proton 8-25 it fixed my water issue

This did it for me! I used Wine Cellar, the Decky plugin, to install proton 8-25 and when selected the water and lava both appear normal. Thanks for posting the solution!

I followed this guide and it fixed it for me.

In short, install protontricks / winetricks, and use it to install d3dx9_41 - I used Proton Experimental, Ubuntu 22.04, Wayland, AMD GPU. I'd already done a whole bunch of other settings which didn't work though so it might be a combo but this last install fixed it for me. I'm hoping this also works on Deck.
Worked for me on the Steam Deck .Thanks

works on steam deck like a dream, tysm! :)

for those also clueless to linuxy stuff like me: hit the steam button, power, switch to desktop mode. use discover, the shopping bag icon, and search for protontricks and install it. launch it, select lego lotr, install application, cancel, install windows DLL or component, select d3dx9_41, ok. then you can go back to gaming mode and launch the game and the flashing should be gone!! :slimehappy:
To fix this issue, follow these instructions

- In Desktop mode, download ProtonUp-Qt and launch it.
- Select “Add version” and add the latest ProtonGE version.
- Once installed, set the proton version for the game to ProtonGE.
- Launch the game, and the problems solved!

Necroing my own post rn only to tell you've reccommended a solution I already mentioned having tried and not working. I mentioned it for a reason, so people don't flood replies with the obvious first guess.

I see. I didn’t notice you were using Linux and not a Steam Deck. The solution I provided only works for Steam Deck I believe. Apologies for the misunderstanding.
