XBox controller not working

for about a year, i've been using my Xbox one controller on my laptop to play games; and recently on this, and several other games; a variety of problems have arisen:

1) whenever I try to use it; I have to configure it so that "a" is displayed as "button 1"
2) whenever I try to use it; a second player "drops in", mirroring my actions

Use the Big Picture mode

1. Connect the XBox one controller to your PC.
2. Start Steam in Big Picture mode.
3. Select the settings icon in the top right.
4. Select the "Add / Test" option under "Controller".
5. Select "Add Steam Controller".

Or:

Open "Settings" in the Steam client.
Select "Controller" and
Configure the 1st controller &+ 2nd pad !

Start the game & enjoy it
