Can you freely change characters before finishing all the levels

In story mode you have to play the given characters but everywhere else you can use any characters you have unlocked during the levels. You can find them wandering in the map areas (friends:-buy, enemies:-fight+buy) usually near the levels you got them in. You can buy them as soon as you find them but you may find that without any red brick multipliers that your studs don't buy you very much. I would hold off and stick with the free charaters until you have one or two of the x2,x4,x6 which will be affordable if you don't spend too much at first (they are 250K, 1M, 4M). The way the bricks are placed in the levels, and the Mithril Blueprints you need for items to get them, it's probably easiest to play through in story mode first to unlock the whole map (use/activate every statue you come across to reveal the areas quests). By the time you've been through you should have enough studs for a few bricks (and enough Mithril for the items you need to make) which will mean you can buy anyone you come across without any trouble.
