Can't unlock Berserker character - am I missing something?

Greetings all,

I've been playing this on and off for a while (after getting it from Humble before it was pulled from sale). I'm in the "Return of the King" section of the game - with Sam and Frodo (in Orc armour) trapped in Mordor at the base of Mount Doom and Legolas et al having just recruited the ghost army.

The game is nagging me to "blow up silver objects with explosives". So I want to try and get the Beserker character from Helms Deep. However, I need Sam and his Elven Rope to climb the side of the walls and Sam and Frodo are trapped in Mordor!

Is there a way around this? Can anyone help?

To get the Beserker or Mithril Fireworks you have to have the areas of the map unlocked and go on the Map-Quests while roaming, not in Story mode.
