Unable to take a hook from the jar in Toni's Shop

According to my walk-through, after talking to Toni about the first aid kit key, Rufus is supposed to take a hook from the jar. He will get hurt and then Toni will give him the first aid kit key. However, no matter how many times I make Rufus reach for the hook, Toni always says "hands off my stuff'. How can Rufus get the hook? Or... is there some other hook somewhere else? I'm stuck at this point.
