We are still ejoying it, its actually a great game and we addore the roguelike/dungeon crawler genre and this is a great one.
As I've said, maybe is just a skill issue and were missing something.
I used a sword named something like "King Strike" (obtained by sacrifice) cause it has the highest attack stat of all the weapons I looted. I used viking helmet, the green boots that give a lot of speed/dex and as trinkets the poison stinger from the scorpions and the blue ring for even more speed of movement and dex.
For perks I mixed a composition of poison stinger of scorpion and poison from the sword/dagger also buffed myself to boost crit strikes and ignored totally sword spells, cause they give awfull penalties for almost nothing on exchange. Reduced 40% of damage is cutting damage by half in most cases witch is non-negotiable as high damage swords don't have a way to compensate this and reducing 35% of crit chance is just making no crits ever, wich is the trigger for a lot of rapier combos...
This weird combination of just pasives, sword strikes and dependency on my ring finger not giving up to rotate arround the boss (to the left as it seems to be easier for some reason) to just strike him wih enough crits to stack poison on it has lead to success. I was playing solo and it took me 10 minutes to kill it. At some point the battle just looked repetitive as it was strike, rotate and just dodge half of the map that was covered with spikes. The beetle didnt touch me even once as fockusing on breaking just the yellow crystals was actually the optimal way.
My theory is still standing, is imposible to break more crystals than she (i learned it is a "she" at a wiki) spawns. And havent tried it in multiplayer yet but im sure the scorpion spawns whenever we fail are going to be a pain in the ass as ive discovered that they have always more speed than the player and as for its easy to dodge them in open spaces (by, surprise, rotating to their left...) they are almost a garanted hit on the 80% of the cases (I dont even want to think of them and the boss together).
Perhaps im being to critic with this boss but the battle was just frustrating as sweet it was seing the last 0.3 percent of her health bar drop to zero. I, personally, didnt enjoy the battle and hope I finish the game without dying so I dont have to repeat this battle ever.
I still want to think and belive its a skill issue.
Even with all thats it is a great game, I probably quit a bit if I have to do the second battle again but I'd come back just as I left for more...cause well, any gamer itself has a bit of masochism in him. And cause I like this game very much...
It really is a DPS check, as has been said. TCS is more about evasion, CG is about DPS, and VNO is... certainly a boss.
I would not at all say it is too hard no matter the prep, I have fought her (and won) by:
1: using only a pickaxe
2: only holding w
3: making the fight 12 minutes long for fun (4 minutes of one shot mode)
4: myself and the lords have literally done it 50+ times (thanks bestiary)
5: no hit too as said above
It is possible! Play with friends to learn, play in experimental if you'd like, etc. There are many ways to test the fight without doing a whole 'nother run.
Statistically (based on crit and attack multipliers), the yellow (defense) crystals do not directly reduce your attack count until they are stacked further (typically around 3 of them) due to rounding. As for the blue (speed) crystals, most of the fight you should be in her face for, so they don't matter much. For the red (attack speed) crystals, it can be a bit much if you are unfamiliar with the fight, but by being in her face and strafing it shouldn't be harshly punishing- heck you can even standstill if you wanted to...
I'm pleased to see someone has read and considered the wiki! If you want tips on CG,beyond the wiki, I highly advise you to join the discord and ask there, we got plenty of dwarves lookin to go crawling, we welcome you to be one of 'em.
I hate chalking things up to "skill issue," so it's more of just learning how the boss is structured and how the weapons are balanced accordingly- you'll make it, crawler!
Find me in the discord, I'm happy to help there.
