2. Well, this time I liked a different type of character I usually like, but to be fair all the dating candidates are on top. The "bi by default" it's so comfortable for all queer people, but as the pronouns set up it's its purpose and I'm glad they added it.
As for the romance aspect I don't have much to say yet, considering the fact that it has not been explored much so far, so I'll refrain from any sort of judjment on that aspect until I get to experience the new update.
As far as the existing romance options, there's several I like, though Hayden is probably my favourite.
2. I def like the current set up, and my controversial opinion is I like that Olric isn't datable. I like to think he's aroace :]!! I'm actually torn between Valen, Celine, Eiland and March xD
You're not the only one who thinks so :) I hope they make this officially canon.
2: I go with whatever character is the most interesting or attractive on my first playthrough of any of these kinds of games. Not even necessarily a character I would even date myself, if their story is interesting enough. There's not enough here yet to be bothered about being picky, though. You can choose whoever.
2. I love all the romance options, but what I'd really love to see is rival romances. I know they're not popular in farming sims, but I just want to see my ships (Valen/Juniper and March/Ryis) become a reality. If I'm not dating someone I think they should be allowed to find love! I'd even love a matchmaking kind of option. Hard to implement, but very cool for sure.
Kind of in a similar vein, I'd really love to see platonic alternatives to progress with potentially-romanceable NPCs - I hate when you miss out on character development/lore because you're not dating someone, and being stuck with a 'first date quest available' or whatever on an NPC (I love Sun Haven but I don't need all these ! on my map for people my character isn't interested in like that) can be a bit bothersome. Incorporating matchmaking could be fun, too (though I'd also like to see polyamorous options...) - maybe a three choice conversation where you can commit to dating, commit to friendship (and if you want, also matchmake or just let things happen with other NPCs without our involvement) or commit to dating with both of you able to also date others (allows both the player to date multiple people ethically, and the background ship-sailing to occur)
I did stick with my usual he/him for this, though, as I typically play farming sims as a masc character and lean towards mlm romances. Which doesn't fully align with my real life orientation, but I've never really played as "myself" in these games so much as an offshoot that's inspired by my preferences and gender envy.
2. I've been enjoying the romance options in this game, and I'm a bit stuck in deciding who to romance. Though I think that Eiland's autistic swag is winning me over.
Like other people have said above, I'd really love to see some rival romances that shows more nuance and flow with the characters in town, outside of your own story. It really makes the world feel more alive at the end of the day, I think.
In regards to 'bi as default', I'd say I'm pretty neutral? I absolutely appreciate that there's queer options, and part of me does love that it's bi at default just because that allows for so much options. And I know I'd be really bummed if a masc character I loved was straight and not romanceable
Though part of me can't help but think that it would be neat to see at least a few characters that were of a more specific sexual orientation, and had more nuanced dialogue to reflect that.
Also, the only other thing I have to say here is that I'd love to see a character like Merri become romanceable. She's so sweet, and has a body type you really don't see much/at all as a romance option. And I know I have at least one lesbian friend who really wants to wife her up
2. There's not much to go on right now as far as romance. I only have 4 stars with people and haven't done the new Stargazing festival yet. I'm kinda disappointed there's no nonbinary character, though. I thought Valen was nb but seems like she's a woman. Similarly, I'm also a bit disappointed that the romanceable guys all seem more or less traditionally masculine (except maybe Eiland) and the romanceable girls all seem pretty traditionally feminine (except Valen). Yeah there's different archetypes of masc and fem represented, but I'm not seeing much in the way of men characters who are fem or women characters who are masc, at least that are romanceable. I do like the bi by default setup. I think it's nice to allow for romanceable characters to be whatever sexual orientation you want, and it doesn't lock me out of any content. It would be nicer if any of the non-romanceable people were in gay relationships, though. Like if Landen & Errol were dating. I am also perfectly fine with Olric not being romanceable. I'm not convinced that Juniper didn't body swap him with Dozy... lol
Ooo, I would love to do some matchmaking!
1. As a queer player, I used my usual pronouns (She/They). I found the aesthetic absolutely adorable, but the only issue was that glasses look funky on the sprite's pixel art, so I didn't use them. I really liked that the clothes aren't locked by gender or body type (masc/fem), and I've been able to find a variety of aesthetics. I very much enjoy the pink and green cottage style, and have seen mods for witchy designs + dark botanicals + dark academia-ish stuff. I didn't get any euphoria for myself, but was very pleased that others would get the representation and affirmation that they deserved :))
2. Playersexual characters are pretty cool IMO, I especially loved it in Baldur's Gate 3 and it has similarly translated into FoM. Love is love, and it transcends gender (though NPCs having some preferences would also be really cool, as it adds a lot of dimension to the game). If matchmaking gets added to the game, I really hope Juniper + Valen are canon because the tension at the inn is on another level, lol. This also ties into the point about preferences; still being able to romance Juniper or Valen, but they prefer women if that makes sense? Rival matchmaking would be sosososososso fun (I could see Elsie being involved in it).
It also feels so fresh to have seemingly no gender roles (e.g. in Stardew, the position of the player at the Flower Dance + wedding clothing is based on gender). The characters are all so cute and well-designed, and I'm honestly in love with all of their sprites. Special mention to Reina; as a gay woman, my jaw DROPPED when I saw her summer outfit.
To actually answer Q2, I'm torn between Reina and Eiland. Probably going to wait until the full game drops and have a save for each of them. Cuties!
Usually in these games all the character appear to be near the same age. In this game, Valen reads as like, 40+, more experienced lady, (like the attractive older doctor lady in "Shrinking"), Hayden reads as 40+ older gentle soul, Ryis & March read like baby 20 year olds, Reina is like 23-26ish, Celine, Adeline, and Eiland are like 24-28ish, Juniper and Balor are mid-30's. Sooo, it feels less like a gender spectrum and more like which one of these personalities fits where I am in life? Seeings how I am in my plant era with animals I absolutely love doting on and also I love cooking, Celine, Reina, and Hayden all speak to me.
All this said, it kinda feels like Olric, Darcy, Merri, and Vera should also be romance-able. (Sure, it would be harder since you'd see them less, but I think that might be part of the fun). I would include Louis but he kinda gives me that vibe of gay man who is already settled down with a partner. And I know it seems odd to have two brothers be romance-able, but Olric is so sweet and I personally am so tired of the unavailable dude you slowly win over trope. It's almost 2025, we deserve better in our romantic partners. Honestly, even Juniper is pushing it for me, she's kind of a B-. Even Elsie is a more interesting non-option than March or Juniper. She seems way more interesting even as an older character- she has such stories and she's for sure a cougar. Meow.
For reference, I am a 38yr old queer woman who has been playing these games since harvest moon on gameboy (in which I always played a boy so I could romance the girls).
2. I usually like the bi by default characters when it comes to romance in games, my only complaint for a lot of games that use this is that they don't really add much representation outside of that, and a lot of the characters themselves you wouldn't really know where gay unless you romance them as a same-sex character (never really showing any same-sex attraction outside of the PC, or talking about queerness at all) or having any other queer characters, fields of mistria doesn't fall into that trap, having very openly queer characters that express and talk about their queerness without any reservation (plus that tension between juniper and valen, damn!)
2. I realized the gender spectrum I'm attracted to is people who are mean to me, especially in a town where everyone is nice. I'll bring that to therapy next time, for sure. As for the Bi-default, I think it's a bit sad because, even though the escapism "perfect world" where all love is love and equal is nice, I also feel like it robs a lot of really compelling romance hooks and a lot of the beauty that comes from queer love. Not to mention that I think it fails to give representation of lesbian and gay characters, and I'd argue even the Bi rep gets weakened.
