Unable to give Caldarus gifts

Like the title says.

When I am visiting Caldarus in the Deep Woods (in his human form) I will have a gift "enabled" (highlighted in the toolbar, and held above my head on-screen) but when I interact with him, he simply says his dialog. I cannot actually give him anything.

According to info I have found online, I *should* be able to give him gifts; there are documented reaction dialogs from him and like/dislike lists. But it occurs to me that could be datamined information that isn't actually active in-game, and so I am unsure if I am experiencing an actual issue with my game. Or, if there is some other "trick" to giving him gifts that just hasn't occurred to me. I just wanna give him some nutritious food and help him recover. It's the least I can do after he saved my life, yanno?
