It would be nice if you just open and close the door like other games where they go inside once it's dark on their own but a reminder would be a good compromise. "Your animals are still out, do you really want to sleep?"
PS I know some hate popups, so maybe it could be a toggle under accessibility for us poor memory impaired
But back to the issue, these type of animals aren't averse of sleeping outside (irl) when it's not winter.
Yeah. Having worked on a farm, locking your animals in at night isn't something you normally do, except for poultry to protect them from predators. You might need to lock bigger farm animals away if you have cougars since they jump fences, but there's no predators in the game. So the only reason to close a door is weather. We normally never closed the big animals in at night. They were allowed to come in or not as they pleased.
As for poultry they normally will go to roost on their own so you just close the door at night. No need to call them in.
Having the normal farm sim mechanic of just opening a door and they come and go as they please would have made the most sense. It's both realistic and what everyone is used to.
If they really wanted, a small penalty for leaving the door open could be a thing but it should be minor or only after you leave it open for a number of nights. But really closing them in is usually only something you do for poultry, and not even then if you have proper predator proof enclosed fencing for them.
Thats not to say there couldnt be something added to make this easier bc i still tend to forget too or not make it back til right before i pass out. lol
