QoL Request: warning that animals are outside, or make it so they come in on their own
Loving the game so far! One gripe: I can't seem to remember to bring my animals into the barn at night, so I get no eggs/milk and they take a dip in their heart progress.

It would be nice to have a warning before sleep that the animals are outside, or just have them come in on their own.

Has nothing to do with skill. It's easy to forget them being outside.

A lot of people have this issue. Putting animals away is not normally something you need to do in farming sims so if you are used to playing a lot of farming sims you're likely to forget it's a thing this time. I haven't had them long but I'm often rushing to bed so don't think about them. I maybe should have put the barn and coop within view of my door to remind myself. I guess I might daycare them and do that but it'd be nice to have things laid out how I visually like instead.

It would be nice if you just open and close the door like other games where they go inside once it's dark on their own but a reminder would be a good compromise. "Your animals are still out, do you really want to sleep?"

PS I know some hate popups, so maybe it could be a toggle under accessibility for us poor memory impaired

I'm usually cutting it close and running home to sleep just before 2am. I don't see how calling the animals in is a "skill issue". I do play a lot of farming sims and it's not a mechanic I'm used to. I also have adhd and for a video game I'd rather not have to rely on a notepad to track things like this for every game day. That's exhausting.

I don't get why they need to be called in when it's not raining on the next day or if it's not winter. They have an eating animation when being outside, but they don't really eat. What's the point?

That's the bit that doesn't make sense to me either. I get tracking the weather and having them inside for storms, but they get mad if you leave them out on beautiful summer nights. They do eat when they're outside though. If you hit Q to inspect them or check the animal tab, it'll show if they've eaten, assuming you have some grass outside

That's so strange... sometimes they eat and sometimes they don't when being outside. Maybe it's bugged on my end.

But back to the issue, these type of animals aren't averse of sleeping outside (irl) when it's not winter.

Yeah. Having worked on a farm, locking your animals in at night isn't something you normally do, except for poultry to protect them from predators. You might need to lock bigger farm animals away if you have cougars since they jump fences, but there's no predators in the game. So the only reason to close a door is weather. We normally never closed the big animals in at night. They were allowed to come in or not as they pleased.

As for poultry they normally will go to roost on their own so you just close the door at night. No need to call them in.

Having the normal farm sim mechanic of just opening a door and they come and go as they please would have made the most sense. It's both realistic and what everyone is used to.

If they really wanted, a small penalty for leaving the door open could be a thing but it should be minor or only after you leave it open for a number of nights. But really closing them in is usually only something you do for poultry, and not even then if you have proper predator proof enclosed fencing for them.

Yeah, animals will move in or out at their leisure. We build the chicken pen in a full enclosure that we pulled down into he ground so that some predators won't be able to dig a hole through the ground. The chickens were still able to get fresh air and see the greenery, but predators had no way of coming in, even from the top. Except when a fox scared these dumb things into running into the fence and getting their small heads stuck into the lattice-like metal fence. Fox bit their heads off.

idk if it helps but when the town bell rings at 8pm i noticed thats when the animals lay down to sleep so ive just been using that as a reminder to swing by my farm if im not already there and let them in even if i go back out and do things before going to bed before 2am.
Thats not to say there couldnt be something added to make this easier bc i still tend to forget too or not make it back til right before i pass out. lol

Kind of wish the door would stay open so they could just go back inside by themselves

My idea for this is give us a craftable bell that we can place anywhere to send all animals inside.
honestly i'd love if they just... went in on their own at night, like any other farming sim. there are days where i know i'm not going to make it back in time (mining days in particular) so i just don't let them out at all on those days. i think it would be great if they went back inside at 8 when the evening bell rings.

Yeah, I don't know why it's part of their gameplay. It's not a new feature, it's a hassle and animals in real life go in and out on their own.

What farming sims are y'all playing that you don't have to put the animals in every night? All Harvest Moons, Story of Seasons, and Stardew Valley all have that mechanic. That being said, i've also forgotten the animals outside a couple times, but you get into the routine quickly. It's nothing new in this style of game.
