Before that - just let them out in Sunny days and make sure you have ordinary weeds in your farm for them.
For this - better to use 10 beads and not a 100 (at least in my experience)
One of the skills also increase the amount of seed/hay you get from grass (I think it's one on the animal skill tree, iirc).
Also, if push comes to shove - you can even feed them their own milk and eggs...
If I can just feed animals those berries, what's the point of mill-made feeds?
