Fields of Mistria

Fields of Mistria

Combat question.
So I've watched some reviews on YT about this game, and one thing that the players always talk about is combat. They said you can only attack on the NSEW directions. Can enemies attack on the diagonal?
Also is there a timing element like dodging needed?

It sounds like combat is clunky, and I really would like to know since mines seem to be a key element of the game and I usually suck at combat.
At least one person said they were playing a pre-release if I understood right, so wondering how combat is right now and if there are plans to overhaul or improve on it. This is my sticking point on buying the game or not ATM and any answers would help.

The combat is lame. I haven't played a farm sim where the combat wasn't lame. Most of the wee bad guys are fairly easy to kill though. I've only come across one type that shoots things and it takes a lot of hits compared to the others. The rest just bump into you or jump on you to cause damage. No dodge but it is easy to just walk away and you can stand behind rocks to avoid the shooters.

Not a huge fan of the combat, to be honestly but it's not that bad. The only life sims I've played with fun combat has been the my time games.

The combat is fairly solid. I'd give it a 10/10

tl;dr, once you land a hit on an enemy, just keep mashing them into the ground.

Combat gets harder when you got tons of enemies though, and fun. Melee enemies tryna take you out, meanwhile you have to dodge the ranged enemies shooting 20 projectiles a second at you.

Neat thing about the rock shooters is that you can hit the rock back at the critter. That does a lot more damage to them than just swinging at 'em. Jumpers stun themselves once they miss you. And peek-a-boo mushrooms can be dazed with the jump attack.

Coral island lets you turn combat off so I just want something to work against.

Yes and what makes it worse is you’re locked into the animation. But it’s not terrible either! If you’re not usually into combat games or you’re not generally good upgrading you sword and making armor could be a big help

you arent supposed to hit the enemies that shoot the projectiles, you can hit the projectiles and shoot them back that way for a lot more damage than if you hit them

I am aware of this mechanic. Unfortunately, it takes a level of hand eye coordination and patience that I do not possess. I find it much easier to just run around like a baboon, hitting rocks and avoiding the monsters I can't kill with a few whacks.

but if your coordination isnt enough fo an easy enemy type, then the combat isnt automatically lame, you just arent made for it, which is okay, but its not the games fault

I didn't say its lame because its difficult. It is lame because there are 3 enemy types and none of them are particularly interesting to look at or fight. It is lame because you just swing your sword at blobs or the things blobs throw at you. It is lame because..it isn't cool.

For this style of game the combat is better than any of the myriad of others I've played

Currently you can attack in the four cardinal directions NSEW with regular attacks and 360 with a technique attack

Enemies can attack from 360 (and above / below) and both of you can move in 360 (and you can also move above)

Basic one swing beats all doesn't apply
Certain enemies require counters, others require patience, others you just mash down
