I can't find caterpillars

I need help! Currently on my 20th day of Spring and I feel like haven't seen caterpillars anywhere? I've been roaming around the maps and poking everything I can think of but still can't find even one :(

they just appear on the ground too, i haven't seen them when its raining though

I found them more when shaking trees! Some bugs also appear only when breaking rocks, cutting grass, etc
