How to hand feed cows?

I'm trying to feed them berries but all I do is pet them. Are they not hungry or am I doing it wrong? I'm holding the berries and hit E key

did you rebind by accident?

You need to stand right at the cow and press G, but if they ate already it will throw it i believe.

I play with controller so it's the same button to feed and pet. Do it first thing in the morning and (obviously) have the item selected so you're holding it. They will eat first and give a little music (I believe) sign. Then you will pet them getting a heart sign. Also, higher quality food (more stars in cooked food) will give more beads for the statue.
As for keys, are the bindings not listed in the menu? I assume it would be the same action button on keyboard too.

Press Q and see if there's a check mark next to the fork and spoon under the cow you're trying to feed (If there's a check mark they've already eaten). if you have food in the trough, they'll often eat that before you can get to them to feed. They also eat pretty quickly after being let outside.

Idk about everyone, but it's E for me. I just hold the food in my hand, stand in front/right of them and hit E. G drops the item for me. You might have to look at the prompt on the bottom left to see what button it is for you.

Most likely your animals already ate if all the buttons aren't working. Try to catch them right as they're coming out. I sometimes pick mine up to stop them from eating grass as they make a beeline straight to grass and immediately start to eat. Happens in less than a second. Maybe try and feed them while they're inside before letting them out?

Strange that people have different bindings without changing them.

For me, E interacts with objects so I naturally assumed that E would also give gifts/feed animals, but I have to press G for that - which makes no sense lol but hey

What time are you trying to feed them? If you inspect them, the box for the check mark for feeding should be empty. But you can't feed them past 10 am because they have already eaten at that point.
