wonder what the hearthstone steam forum is like i'd expect it to be worse than here lol
it'd be somewhat worse than here i reckon
bottom line is that hearthstone is just worse altogether so makes sense players would be more irate
Hearthstone isn't as overtly rigged as Arena, so there wouldn't be as many complaints.
Also, as bad as Hearthsone's meta game may be, it is far better than mtg. At least games last longer than turn 5 in Hearthstone.
And unlike Arena, Hearthstone is actually able to turn a profit without having to rely on STEAM taking a cut in its earnings. Lastly, Battlegrounds probably has more active players than any single mode in Hearthstone or Arena.
I seriously don't understand the delusional and arrogant mtg hype when the game is not doing well, and WOTC has had poor quarterlies within the last couple of years except for some standouts due to Baldur's Gate and Modern Horizons.
Arena was not on Steam for a long time, doing just fine. And player numbers don't correlate to game quality, SNAP being a case in point.
Anyway, it's a subjective metric, different people enjoy different things. FWIW, I agree with OP, since he said mtg, not Arena.
it doesn't count as a true card game though
and MTG is still the best either way
Don't get me wrong, I firmly believe that HS is rigged based on my experiences, and as you pointed out, Blizzard actually has a patent where they advocate for systems that rig matchmaker to market and advertise microtransactions.

With Hearthstone, modes like Battlegrounds feel rigged, and the Standard Conquest mode feels like the matchmaker is rigged at times, but it feels subtle because in Hearthstone you can overcome a lot of the rigging since gameplay can be so complex that the person who benefits from rigging can screw up. On the contrary, Arena's rigging and pseudo-randomized algorithms are on a completely different scale, and Arena's rigging is far more omnipresent and aggressive than I have ever experienced in any video game. Moreover, WOTC has watered down decision-making in Arena so much that most games are decided by the opening hand.
A solid contender, though the original edition had issues. :D
WoTC had a demo of the game at Neutral Ground NY years ago and I was impressed by the game play. It reminded me of a Shadowrun running the Matrix style game sans the magic. Cyberpunk was a tad grittier imho. We used to have a dedicated group of Netrunner players who met regularly at various game shops in NYC. I am not sure if they still do.
They also produced several reports into how to turn WoW into an optimised skinner box that captured player attention and denied them the ability to leave, back when that was first being developed. It's sorta dystopian to read.
Such a peak position... among detritus.
