Magic: The Gathering Arena

Magic: The Gathering Arena

How do I win??
I have played Magic for over 10 years in a variety of formats, mainly standard a while ago and more recently modern and commander. I am getting into Arena and playing standard again. The issue is that I cannot seem to win a game. I got to silver a few days ago and I have maybe won 2 games since.

I have been playing Jeskai or Esper Oculus and I won most of my games in bronze and unranked but I cannot win in silver. My opponents always seem to have an answer or are faster than me or I always run out of steam and can never close it out. Can someone please give me some advice on what to do? I dont have any rare or mythic wildcards so I can’t really make new decks, and the same stuff is happening with the starter decks as well.

I don’t think I am bad at magic. I always do well in modern when I play in person and I understand the game very well. Please help me🙏

Oculus decks seem to be expensive - they contain a huge amount of rares and mythics. Playing a 3-color deck also doesn't help - it will require a lot of dual lands, and the good ones usually are rares. It's a tough start.

You can copy your deck here to give other players more info. Perhaps someone will have good suggestions for card replacements.

I think aggro decks are overall better for new players - they're usually more consistent (fewer issues with card draw), cheaper, and much faster. The faster the matches are, the quicker you get daily gold and the more cards you will get for your collection.

If your deck doesn't perform well, you can try playing Starter Deck Duel for a while. Your chances of winning might be higher, making it easier for you to get the first win of the day (250 gold). It's also a decent method of completing quests that have color restrictions.

Tripple color for starter is certainly difficult. Do you have all the rare lands or are you playing with the tapped commons/uncommons lands? If you have a "finished" Oculus deck, then you can most certainly hit Mythic with it. For BO1 you might just need to make some adaptations and run more removal vs red aggro (e.g. Torch the Tower or Sheltered by Ghosts)

Generally, it's best to play a monocolor deck for starter. Monoblack works well in BO1 but is only really strong vs aggro and some other mid-range decks. It's a "meta counter".

The starter decks are unplayable in anything but starter deck duels. There's a channel on YT called "phantasm" who is building creative decks with just commons & uncommons. If you're bored by a single deck you can check him out.

If you want to build your collection it's also a good idea to get into drafting (Quick Draft easier since you don't have time pressure). With 3+ wins you're getting more cards for your gold than from buying packs and if you can get 4-5 wins you can even refinance your next draft.

I do have all the rare lands for both versions of Oculus. I ran out of wildcards making those decks. I have wanted to try running mono red Afro it seems fun. But I will for sure check out that YouTube channel!
Just go Monored. You literally can't hit mythic with a better wildcard economy regarding rares.
Did you use the Free Codes?
if not, that will help a littleto get some Wildcards. :steamhappy:
And yes it is hard, because most players just copy an turnament winer deck. They dont use it proberly, but is is high tier list you fight against, so it dosent really matter.

Ranked dosent matter too. take a closer look at the regward lis. you ONLY get 1 more booster after Gold. go try hard for mystic are JUST 3 more booster a Month, it is like 2-3 days gold farming.... you dont really want hurt your soul that way, do you? :criticalhit:

i yould say. take a look at the Tier list and what do they have in common. Couter that with you deck.
easy life.
dont play the Meta by copy. it. just Brake it.
be sure, you cant win all rounds.
:steambored:

" my feelings tell me. we all get an 50/50 qute on the long turn."
:steamsalty:

I also started to play at revised, but fact is, MTG today is just meta copycating of the most powerful or efficient (in terms of speed of matchex x win%) dominate the ladder.

You are trying to pilot a complicated and less consistent deck against stuff that can be played consistently by a 5yo and still win over 50%. Nothing wrong with it, but get used to frustration.

Go to untapped (dot) net, find the Mouse Enchant deck, copy it, and play Standard. You'll win most of your games rather quickly. It's very easy to build as well.

Then, take that version to Alchemy, play it there, and you'll win even more.
