Valgavoth's Onslaught Question
Valgavoth's Onslaught: XXG
Manifest dread X times, then put X +1/+1 counters on each of those creatures. (To manifest dread, look at the top two cards of your library, then put one onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature and the other into your graveyard. Turn it face up any time for its mana cost if it's a creature card.)

So, one of the X's is for the times to Manifest Dread and the second X is for the number of counters put on each 2/2.

Q: Do both X's have to be the same amount or could I cast MD twice and then add Counters say 4 times?

I am thinking the X's don't have to be cast for the same amount but wanted to be sure before I invest a wild card.

And thank you Duskmourn for at least giving me ONE possible addition to my Mono Green Standard. It can beat that mono red ~50/50 but pretty much lays down and licks it's nuts against that mono black discard. If not for that deck it would win over 60% consistently.

If the cost says "X" twice, then it's the same X, but you have to pay it twice. So if the X is 1, then you have to pay 3 mana, you manifest dread 1 and you put +1/+1 on each of those once. If the X is 2, then you pay 5 mana to manifest twice and give them +2/+2.

Both X are the same number. Lets say you want to pay X=3, so you pay 7 mana total (3+3+G), manifest dread 3 times, get 3x 2/2 creatures with +3/3 counters on them, so 3x 5/5 total.
X has to be at least 1 (so 3 mana spent total) to make sense (one 3/3 creature).
I don't think there's ever been an x y card yet. There's ones that count different creatures types for a trigger, but not one with separate scalable costs. I guess modes or spree are most similar

Check this out: https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/X
See "Other" section. There was Fireball printed with X Y costs.
And there are some cards with power/toughness printed as +X/+Y, where X =/= Y.

Only in an old silver bordered set. I vaguely remembered it existing and scryfall came through.
