Speed up the turn counter
It's getting extremely old sitting around waiting for someone to take their turn. Being in gold ranked, you should know what your deck does. You don't have to sit there and read every detail admiring the artwork while making a play. Put down the cheetohs and play the damn game, son.

yeah speed up the timers, so I cannot read the enemy cards and lose because I don't waste 10 hours a day playing magic.

If you can't come back to Arena in a timely fashion because you have some other game or program going on your device then you're part of the problem, of course if your cat is being a ♥♥♥♥ then that's understandable but you should have some respect for your opponent and not ignore them for some other game
How do I "show respect" what emote do I use to say "BRB" you realise our hands are HEAVILY tied when it comes to relaying information to our opponent mid match right?

And if a single timer is to long for you I can't help that, and If I burn all my timers and auto lose and wasted 5 minutes of your time, tough I took a lose, take your win and stop complaining.

Agreed. Granted life happens but it is no reason to be rude. It literally takes a second to concede. If life is happening, conceding is the right thing to do. I've done it for that reason often enough.

"speed up timer" Oh yes, please make the timer tick 1 second every half second. I don't believe making the timer "quicker" is the answer here.

Where did this idea that the mentality behind it flows 100% like this all the time: Player just leaves thinking "hey I'll never get back in time to keep going, like rope that blagger" when most often it's "Really, their calling me down stairs now!? Maybe it'll be quick I should be back before the 2nd timer pops. Goes down stairs, parents give a 15 minutes winded speech, you have to bring garbage outside than your little brother asks you a million questions about Lord of the Rings, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you can't walk away from that." What I'm getting at is people don't just know how long their going to be gone, and your projecting bad intentions onto people, when majority of the time they just didn't know.

I get your point and if you think you are coming back shortly, fine of course, and I don't infer intentions of other people without seeing some evidence first. Typically I assume malice when I see mouse interaction but they are still roping until the last moment before they lose a clock counter.

I think a lot of people have issues with ego involved competitions and one symptom of that is this weird, "if I waste my opponent's time enough maybe they will go away and I can get a win instead of a loss", line of thought. Is that everyone who ropes? No way! I suspect many a mobile player wishes they were playing on a better device with better support and that's a factor too.

Granted I do not have a billion family members demanding my attention but I care for my gf and when she needs something sometimes that takes precedence over fun, sometimes my 88 year old cancer fighting Dad calls and he takes priority. Etc. In those cases when it isn't just that I stepped 5 feet away for a second, I will concede knowing another match will be available when I get back.

But this attitude that multitasking is normal and "everyone does it" is untrue. If you feel free to rudely waste your opponent's time because watching a show is more important, well imho that should mean you turn off the game and watch the show. Not sit spellbound until your timer runs down and then suddenly remember you are playing M:TG a brain-intensive game (at times.)

That said without a chat there isn't much to give us information about what our opponents are thinking or why they are behaving in this way. We must make SOME inferences based on what we see and experience.

I usually give my opps an emote if I see them roping just hoping maybe they see that and realize someone is waiting on them. It will be something like a single "Much Obliged" or the <3 Hedron to show patient but determined interest in the game. If they respond by starting to play (often) I think nothing more of it. If they start clicking on everything but doing nothing to stop the roping, that's a pretty clear sign. Otherwise, it is anyone's guess and maybe one of those scenarios you mentioned happened.

I am reminded of a game on MTGO years ago where my opponent stopped playing, and chatting and I waited until they came back almost at the point where the (idling) clock ran them out and they said their kid fell out of a chair and they had to make sure they were alright. Absolutely family comes first.

It does not take much though to be courteous on the client as you would want others to be, and concede a game you are interrupting for a mundane reason.

My take on it anyway.

The "mousing over things" doesn't really relay much when your holding your phone and it thinks your doing stuff your not. It also doesn't take much to give an opponent 5 minutes of your time to receive a free win.

On a whole other note I do believe they need to say disconnected when your opponent has been disconnected for server side reasons. On mobile at least theirs bugs still that cause you to straight up disconnect for no reason other than "MTG Arena doesn't like mobile internet" at least that's the excuse given to me via ticket ages ago. It'd be interested to see how many ropers are actually bug victims.

yeah but it's not 5 minutes, the game unlike Eternal card game will let people stall and rope literally forever, which is why this thread was made and I completely agree with making the timers faster/shorter and even making them like Eternal where after so long of stalling(doesn't matter what you're doing in real life the game doesn't care) it'll get so fast it'll auto concede you
And I also love the idea someone had above to put people who go slow and stall into their own queues and let faster players play faster games and rounds

No they do not let you stall and rope forever unless your taking actions at some point which...isn't stalling. the action timer which is different from the 30min match timer is only a whopping 30 seconds long (I know seems longer) timer takes a minute (Apparently) to pop, 3 pops your done. 3 minute mulligan timer gives you 6 minutes sorry if they do nothing from the mulligan on. Also no we don't need a to divide deck diversity farther by separating ques into "fast play" and "Stallers" people will stall literally at that point to be removed from the fast play que.

Where are the people who want even more time? There aren't any huahahahahhaha
Berserkr Aug 6, 2024 @ 11:46am
You tell that to the guy that stalled me for about 20 min one time, he was slow but I liked the deck match up so I played the game, but it's possible for someone to drag a game on for a long time, this was in Historic non ranked btw

The"until the last possible moment before losing a clock counter" part is key to that sentence. It does not make sense otherwise.

And yes, when Arena released the mobile version it was said from the start it would be wobbly and not the ideal way to play the game. But WOTC was in a little bit of a bind because they made Arena to be competitive with Eternal and HS and you can play those on mobile devices but WOTC has historically been bad at internet/electronics related things (cf: "It's the technology". So you got what you got there. :/ I recommend using a steady connection on a good machine and not relying on mobile at all.

I do agree that the client should be able to pickup when your moving the mouse etc. well pretending to be afk and start cutting your timers in half or and I know this will be controversial but I think personally if the game catches you roping for multiple games it should just straight up give you a cool-down on the find match button that should just progressively get worse with each game, and shorter with each you finish. If your busy with something, a few minutes on the cool-down shouldn't matter to you and if your abusing roping well than it'd be working as intended. This would also allow conceding to continue to be a "respected" action as your leaving before your rope pops ever.
