And if a single timer is to long for you I can't help that, and If I burn all my timers and auto lose and wasted 5 minutes of your time, tough I took a lose, take your win and stop complaining.
I get your point and if you think you are coming back shortly, fine of course, and I don't infer intentions of other people without seeing some evidence first. Typically I assume malice when I see mouse interaction but they are still roping until the last moment before they lose a clock counter.
I think a lot of people have issues with ego involved competitions and one symptom of that is this weird, "if I waste my opponent's time enough maybe they will go away and I can get a win instead of a loss", line of thought. Is that everyone who ropes? No way! I suspect many a mobile player wishes they were playing on a better device with better support and that's a factor too.
Granted I do not have a billion family members demanding my attention but I care for my gf and when she needs something sometimes that takes precedence over fun, sometimes my 88 year old cancer fighting Dad calls and he takes priority. Etc. In those cases when it isn't just that I stepped 5 feet away for a second, I will concede knowing another match will be available when I get back.
But this attitude that multitasking is normal and "everyone does it" is untrue. If you feel free to rudely waste your opponent's time because watching a show is more important, well imho that should mean you turn off the game and watch the show. Not sit spellbound until your timer runs down and then suddenly remember you are playing M:TG a brain-intensive game (at times.)
That said without a chat there isn't much to give us information about what our opponents are thinking or why they are behaving in this way. We must make SOME inferences based on what we see and experience.
I usually give my opps an emote if I see them roping just hoping maybe they see that and realize someone is waiting on them. It will be something like a single "Much Obliged" or the <3 Hedron to show patient but determined interest in the game. If they respond by starting to play (often) I think nothing more of it. If they start clicking on everything but doing nothing to stop the roping, that's a pretty clear sign. Otherwise, it is anyone's guess and maybe one of those scenarios you mentioned happened.
I am reminded of a game on MTGO years ago where my opponent stopped playing, and chatting and I waited until they came back almost at the point where the (idling) clock ran them out and they said their kid fell out of a chair and they had to make sure they were alright. Absolutely family comes first.
It does not take much though to be courteous on the client as you would want others to be, and concede a game you are interrupting for a mundane reason.
My take on it anyway.
On a whole other note I do believe they need to say disconnected when your opponent has been disconnected for server side reasons. On mobile at least theirs bugs still that cause you to straight up disconnect for no reason other than "MTG Arena doesn't like mobile internet" at least that's the excuse given to me via ticket ages ago. It'd be interested to see how many ropers are actually bug victims.
And I also love the idea someone had above to put people who go slow and stall into their own queues and let faster players play faster games and rounds
The"until the last possible moment before losing a clock counter" part is key to that sentence. It does not make sense otherwise.
And yes, when Arena released the mobile version it was said from the start it would be wobbly and not the ideal way to play the game. But WOTC was in a little bit of a bind because they made Arena to be competitive with Eternal and HS and you can play those on mobile devices but WOTC has historically been bad at internet/electronics related things (cf: "It's the technology". So you got what you got there. :/ I recommend using a steady connection on a good machine and not relying on mobile at all.
Sorry that you suck balls at multi-tasking... and spelling.
