Magic: The Gathering Arena

Magic: The Gathering Arena

It's been a couple of years since I played. What do I do?
I'm not playing against real players. I have social issues and can't handle the nerves. So I just play against AI.

I have around 50,000 gold. I don't plan to buy gems or pay real money for anything. What should I do with my gold?

I searched for codes and was only able to redeem a few of them. The rest said they didn't work. Is there a code list that is all redeemable I should check?

There are newer decks that new players could collect, like Grave Matter and Balancing Act. Can these be collected from past players as well?

Anything else a newbie/returning player should know?

they switched from codes to pack given in the mail now sadly. You just do your dailies/challenges pretty much.

Oh...I thought packs and other things cost gems AND gold, but it's either or...nice.

You might as well just go play another game the only PVE vs AI in this game is the sparky tutorial thing

There's the ability to play against a bot. Yeah, it's not very challenging, but it's there. But that wasn't my question anyway.

It you're just playing against the bot, it really doesn't matter what you spend the gold on. Having a decent deck doesn't matter because playing against the bot is basically playing against a goldfish. Spend the gold on whatever packs you want to build a jank pile from to play against the bot with.

If you still want to play, go for it. But I'd agree with Berserkr that you'd probably have more fun in a different game designed with PvE in mind. Even if it's specifically mtg you want to play, there are better options out there, even if the card list may not be up to date.

Fortunately communication is limited to basic emotes, so you don't need to worry about socialising much.

It doesn't matter. Knowing there's another person on the other end freaks me out. I just played a Jump In match and I'm not familiar with all the cards. So I was getting super nervous trying to read the cards in order to keep up. I couldn't focus. I couldn't concentrate taking that much time. I just can't do the PvP thing no matter what the situation is. It's a shame as there are some awesome games out there, but the developers FORCE PvP upon the players. This game has AI that you can play. It sucks they don't expand on that and allow some of us to enjoy it in more ways.

The old DotP games sound good for you. They're not on the steam store anymore but you I think the key stores probably have some. For a free option, you can go for shandalar, which is on abandonware sites and I think has asome fan updates.

If you haven't seen speed runner for shandalar you're missing out.

Yeah, you just make sure you check in with the "big list of promo codes" to get your packs and more importantly wildcards off the packs, but dont spend the wild cards quite yet. You are going to want to play a bunch and familiarize yourself before burning wilds because you will never get them at such a fast rate ever again like from those promo codes...

In your position, I would download something like MTGA assistant, to give you draw percentage and draft pick quality in real time. Dont spend your gold on premier drafts, just do a quick draft every day or something. Run a premier only when a new set drops and you have no access to the quick draft variant of that set for those first two weeks.

Yeah, quick draft isnt "real" drafting, but you get way more opportunities for rares/mythics, which saves you wild cards... so when you are quick drafting, and this is another benefit of MTGA assistant is it tells you how many copies of a card you have, just grab the rares/mythics you can rather than fully focusing on building your draft deck. Those rare/mythic picks are locked in, but wins never are, so always grab rares/mythics for freebies even if they arent the color deck you are building for that draft...

Anyway, another decent way to play is the jump-in/jump start events. They are cheap and you get random packet choices, and if you look up "mtg arena jump in packet info list" on google, the top link should show you all those packet themes and what rares/mythics you have a chance of getting in your packet choices.

That is probably the best way to play in general without spending money. Side note, do your best to just never spend gems. You never know when something random in the store will pop up that you really want, like land arts or whatever, and also, getting a mastery pass for "free" off earned gems takes a bit, but is totally worth it in the end because you are going to lock in a bunch of rewards/wilds.

Beyond that, I would just check out AetherHub, a nice easy website that will show you what decks are best in any format. Find a budget deck or two that you can build, either through MTGA assistants analyzer deck helper thing, or just from aetherhub. Eventually you will lose to a bunch of sweet decks just climbing ranked and you will want to check them out, and that is when you burn your wildcards. Just take a screenshot of your gameplay and look at the enemies cards on field and you can search them on Aetherhub in pairs of 3 cards in the user deck area and it will pop up decks with those cards that people have posted and you can export the deck and boom.

Summar: Quick drafts, jump in events, cherry pick rares/mythics to conserve wild cards, only use wildcards on decks you are truly interested in and take card turnover into consideration for formats like standard. Premier draft here and there during the opening couple weeks of a new set. Never be so attached to the game that it sways your mood. You can always just fold a match and jump into another. Start now and be knowledgeable within a few months and a good player within a year or even less. gl

Edit: If you dont want to set up a real time background assistant app, you can always just use 17lands, a website, to help you with draft picks. Thats what everyone does. Just look up "17lands (insert set name) tier list limited" and it will be the first link and give you a big chart of cards.

Welcome to Mtga, sorry to hear about your social issues. You are in a safe place here. I can sympathize with your nervousness and would suggest that you go play a nicer game like WoW..

You can't do very much in WoW without playing with other players. Unfortunately, my friends no longer play.

I am severely disabled with a disease that removes my biological ability to handle any stress. My body doesn't produce Cortisol, the chemical used to handle stress, and my ''fight or flight response'' is completely gone.

I don't draft because it's too stressful(and I don't really find it fun).

I would suggest you try out historic and brawl, however. They are the only reasons I still play this game. I ignore any meta nonsense and just make fun, tribal decks. The timer has never, EVER been an issue. In fact, I think the game awards you too much time. You can blaze through the first 3 turns of a Brawl match and guarantee yourself what feels like an eternity in the later rounds. Like, I find myself alt tabbing A LOT when playing this game because there's so much downtime waiting for people to play their cards.

I too came back after a few years and it was very easy to start playing again in these gamemodes. My Ixalan and Rivals of Ixalan vamps and dinos are all still amazing and viable.

And just remember, there's nothing to lose! You can be there scrambling frantically game after game, trying to figure out what card you should play, and nothing negative is going to happen. Remember that.

Go to your settings and set other players to Auto Mute. They don't exist anymore. You are free in your own little world now to do what you need to do.

Oh, and I'm not saying the cliche ''Oh, i have the same problem and if I could solve my issue then you can solve yours''. No. I'm only bringing up my condition so you know that I of all people, 100% completely understand your situation. All I'm saying is that I understand, I can relate, and here's some information.

There is a Discord channel you could meet people, if that's a possibility to you. There's no in game timer for friendly games between people on your in game friends list, so that can remove a lot of the stress.

Oh, and what I do with my gold is just save a big chunk like you have, 50k, for special cosmetics I like that go on daily deals or promotions in the shop. Then I use everything else to buy like 15packs at a time of a set I like that contains a bunch of tribal cards. I opened like 30 packs of Baldur's Gate and made a dragon tribal Miirym Commander Brawl deck. Next I'm thinking of getting Phyrexian packs.

It would be great if they changed up the Bot Decks from time to time, or at least added new ones. It's been the same handful of decks since Arena was released, and it would take no effort whatsoever to make new ones from time to time.

I generally play bot matches while whipping together new decks, just to see how they play out. So seeing some new ones with some different plays would be great.
